AirPods 2 gets Bluetooth SIG certification; may come with biometric sensors : Report

06 November 2018 3

People expected Apple to announce the successors of AirPods during the last product launch. Despite updating its Mac Mini, MacBook Air, and iPad Pro, Apple did not update AirPods. Though the AirPods 2 have been making their presence felt since some time, however, it’s the first time they are getting an official mention at Bluetooth SIG certification listing.

The listing on SIG’s website not only confirms the existence of the next-gen AirPods but also reveals key specifications about Apple’s Wireless Earphones. The listing also fuels rumors that the AirPods 2 will be coming in with some new features and enhancements.

The AirPods are listed under the model number A2031 A2032, a serial number each for the left and the right earbuds, and reveals that they will support Bluetooth 5.0 instead of Bluetooth 4.2 on the current ones. This upgrade would mean longer wireless range up to 50 meters; double the data transmission and a better battery life.

In a related news, a recent trademark filed by Apple hints that the AirPods 2 may come with more functionalities. The trademark was filed under Class 10 general wellness device category which comprises “health, fitness, exercise, and wellness sensors, monitors, speakers and displays for measuring, displaying, tracking, reporting, monitoring, storing, and transmitting biometric data, heart rate, body movement, and calories burned."

This hints towards the previous reports which suggest that the AirPods may soon support Siri and may be waterproof as well to be used in a gym or during an extended jogging session

Bluetooth 5.0 is around now. And what exciting thing this upgrade brings is the longer wireless range. Bluetooth 5.0 is much better than the former Bluetooth 4.2.
