Apple’s AirPods are the company’s second best-selling new product of all time, according to a report by Above Avalon analyst Neil Cybart. The report states that Apple is on track to sell 40 million pairs of AirPods in 2019, which represents almost 90% year-over-year growth. Google searches have reportedly increased by 500% over the last holiday season for Apple AirPods.
AirPods are currently outpacing Apple Watch sales by 40% at the same time after launch. The most popular Apple product was the iPad, while the iPhone has been deemed the most important tech product by Apple, while the iPad actually saw a bigger surge of early sales.
The report states, “The higher interest is reflective of stronger sales. According to my estimate, Apple is on track to sell approximately 40 million pairs of AirPods in 2019, representing close to 90% year-over-year growth. There are already at least 25 million people wearing AirPods. This total will likely exceed 50 million people later this year. These are massive sales and adoption figures for a two-year old product that has never received an update and rarely goes on sale for less than its $159 selling price”.
Apple is reportedly planning to launch new AirPods in early 2019. The upcoming AirPods will come with Hey Siri support, as well as new health-monitoring functions, noise cancellation and water-resistance. They will have a more grippable coating and will be available in a black colour option as well. Rumours suggest that Apple plans to do a full redesign on its way in 2021.
