Nu Republic Starboy Bluetooth Headphones review

03 June 2019 3

Almost everyone enjoys listening to music or watching movies on the phone and a good pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones are important to enhance this experience. Though I’ve always preferred in-ear earphones and have used wireless Bluetooth earphones like Mi Neckband and true wireless earbuds like Samsung Galaxy Buds (review) or Blaupunkt BTW-01.

It is basically the comfort and minimalistic design of most in-ear headphones that has never made me explore the over the ear headphones. Recently, I got to try the Nu Republic Starboy over the ear Bluetooth headphones, and I could feel the difference at least in terms of audio experience at least. Let us see what more these headphones offer in the detailed review below.

Nu Republic Starboy review: Build and Design

The Starboy over the ear Bluetooth headphones are made of plastic and come in a matte black avatar with silver colored Nu branding on the side of each speaker unit. These headphones are comfortable to wear on different head sizes and come with a plastic slider to adjust the size. They come with a tilt in design, making them compact for travel. Since it is entirely made of plastic, you need to exercise caution while adjusting the size or folding the earcups.

The ear cups are decently sized and can fit over the different size of ears. The earcups are made of soft faux leather and come with a memory foam padding for extended hours of usage. The headband is also made of plastic and comes with a thin layer of foam for support. There are no extra set of ear cups available in the box.

There is a 3.5mm aux connectivity option and buttons are placed on the right earcup with the power button housed at the back while the volume control which doubles as track change buttons also are placed on the front. The buttons are very easy to locate and have good tactile feedback. There is a micro USB charging slot for tank up to the battery and a charging/connectivity alert as well. Overall the headphone weighs just around 170 grams and is comfortable for a few hours of usage. Though it took me some time to get used to a pair of headphones since I wasn’t used to using over the ear headphones

Nu Republic Starboy review: Performance

The Nu Republic Bluetooth headphones perform more than decent when compared to the price it retails at. These budget Bluetooth headphones are slightly bass heavy and balanced treble. The audio quality doesn’t get distorted at high volumes and offers accurate mono and stereo sound output.

The Nu Republic Starboy Wireless headphone comes with 50mm neodymium drivers which are designed on multiple diaphragms helping in creating good quality of 3D surround sound.

While the company has not revealed the battery capacity on Nu Republic Starboy headphones and claims that these headphones offer 8 hours of battery backup, and we found that mostly accurate. In my test, I found that the battery lasted beyond 8 hours multiple times, though the battery life may reduce over regular usage.

Call quality on the headphones was a better experience than I had imagined. Though in noisy environments it could not isolate my voice that wasn’t even expected from a budget Bluetooth headphone. While listening to music, I noticed the minimal audio leak which is helpful when you’re using public transport and co-travelers aren’t disturbed.

Nu Republic Starboy Bluetooth Headphones review

If you’re looking for a pair of budget wireless over the ear headphones, then Nu Republic Starboy should be on the top of your list. While these headphones can fold inwards making them compact to carry, the earcups do not swivel on the axis and keep sticking out, which makes them slightly difficult to carry around the neck. Available in a couple of color variants, the Starboy headphones normally sell at Rs. 1500 on Amazon but can be are regularly a part of the lightning deals where it sells around Rs. 1000, making them an obvious choice.

No battery capacity mentioned. Initially, it was a bit confusing to know how the battery life is marked as a positive when the capacity isn't mentioned. But if tests are proving it to last 8 hours, there's some weight behind it.
