Samsung has launched the Galaxy Watch Active 2 ahead of its Galaxy Unpacked event which is happening on August 7. This is a more refined and an upgraded version over the Galaxy Watch Active that was launched earlier this year as a less expensive smartwatch.
The latest Galaxy Watch Active 2 smartwatch brings an upgrade to Samsung’s signature rotating bezel. The rotating bezel control was removed earlier from the Galaxy Watch but now it’s making a comeback. However, unlike the Galaxy Watch and earlier models, the Active 2 doesn’t have a physically rotating dial. The new smartwatch has a digital bezel instead that works with the help of touch. The black border that surrounds the screen is a touch-sensitive strip that lets you scroll through the screens and menus on the watch when you run your finger over it.
The rotating touch bezel turns both clockwise and counter-clockwise. Samsung adds that the upgraded One UI offers more sophisticated and natural user experience for navigation. The watch emits haptic buzz to simulate the clicks when you run your finger over the rotating bezel.
Overall, the design of the Active 2 is very similar to its predecessor. It’s thin, light, and has a classic look that appeals more like a regular watch.
The Galaxy Watch Active 2 comes in two sizes – 40mm with a 1.2-inch display and 44mm with 1.4-inch display; and Bluetooth and LTE versions. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 has improved heart rate monitor and accelerometer in the Active 2 over previous models.
The Active 2 also includes ECG capabilities but Samsung says the feature will not be active at launch. The ECG tracks the electrical activity generated by the heart as it contracts and let you notify if your heart is having any issues and give you a warning. The ECG tracking feature may arrive in early 2020 when Samsung will get FDA approval.
The Galaxy Watch Active 2 with its activity tracking features as the predecessor can track around 15 different activities automatically, including swimming, which came to Galaxy Watch Active with an update.
The Bluetooth versions of the Active 2 come in aluminum and the LTE versions are available in stainless steel. The smartwatch supports Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC for mobile payments support, as well as GPS for tracking workouts without the phone.
Samsung has also launched a new feature called “My Style” that allows you to create customized watch faces based on your outfit. You just need to take a photo of your outfit, choose from five different color patterns and you watch face will get prepared in seconds. So, this way you can change your watch face each and every day.
