Visa unveils mobile payment sunglasses

15 March 2017 4

Visa has unveiled new mobile payment sunglasses at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas as well as at the Quicksilver Pro and Roxy Pro surf competitions in Gold Coast, Australia on March 13. The company distributed 50 pairs of the sunglasses to influencers and partners at the events for a limited trial.

The sunglasses come with a tiny chip on its side, through which the user can make mobile payments. Users have to take off the sunglasses and tap them on a Visa near field communication (NFC) enabled the terminal to make payments, no card swiping required. The company is currently testing the glasses to see if there is any demand for them, before going for a public rollout.

Chris Curtin, chief brand and innovation marketing officer at Visa stated, “Our view is we take form factors that you don’t expect to be payment-enabled like sunglasses or maybe like a ring and expose to the market that maybe it can be.”

"It ties back to our tagline of everywhere you want to be," said Chris Curtin, chief brand and innovation marketing officer at Visa. "Without it, it's hard for us to fulfill our tagline. Our view is we take form factors that you don't expect to be payment-enabled like sunglasses or maybe like a ring and expose to the market that maybe it can be."

Although wearable shipments have witnessed all time high in Q4, 2016, many wearable makers had to shut down in 2016. Fitbit, which is a leader in the wearable space, has to recently lay off more than 100 employees.
