Amazon is setting up its first experiential Lab126 outside the US, in India according to reports. The secretive lab will be set up in Mumbai and will help improve its services and portfolio of devices in India, its fastest growing market.
The company’s R&D lab is behind its gadgets like the Kindle ebook reader, Echo smart speaker, Dash buttons, and Fire tablets and streaming devices. Amazon already has six such labs in the US which have over 3000 employees. According to company sources, Amazon is already hiring people for its new lab in India.
The new lab could house developers who will work on ideas that are concocted in the US but could also work on innovations that are meant for the Indian market.
“There was talk that it will be in Hyderabad but it looks like they’ve chosen Mumbai,” said an Amazon source requesting anonymity as he is not authorized to speak with the press.
Amazon has targeted India as a priority market. The Indian online retail space is expected to become a $100 billion market by 2020. Amazon had earlier announced that it has earmarked $5 billion to invest in its Indian operations. Amazon India has also stated that it will be launching its smart home speaker, the Amazon Echo in India next month.
