ZTE announces Axon M folding smartphone with dual displays

18 October 2017 3

ZTE has made a rather big announcement with its Axon M, being a folding phone, one which many companies have attempted before but fell short off. Could ZTE be the first to pull this off correctly? There have been quite a few rumours regarding the launch of the Axon M.This would mean getting the design on point as well as other things like software and optimization. This vision of the company is definitely a huge leap into the future. The internals of the Axon M is far from being low end but isn’t the highest end either. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 821; a chipset we saw the OnePlus 3T launching with almost a year ago.

The rest of the specifications of the device can be seen below:

2.15GHz Snapdragon 821

Dual 5.2" 1920x1080 "TFT LCD" w/Gorilla Glass 5

3180mAh, Quick Charge 3.0

64GB emmc v5.1

Bluetooth 4.2, 2.4/5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi

Rear camera

20MP f/1.8, 4K@30FPS, 1080P@30FPS, 720p@240fps

Front camera

None (rear camera can be used for both)

Android 7.1.2 Nougat

150.8 x 71.6 x 12.1 mm (5.93 x 2.82 x 0.48 inches)

$24.17 x 30 months ($725.10)

One of the most noteworthy features of the device is definitely its dual 5.2-inch 1080p displays. Running on a 3180mAh battery, it would certainly be interesting to see how the battery life is. The narrow bezels and hinge allow both screens to get pretty close. The smartphone is being marketed as having four different modes; Dual Mode, Extended Mode, Mirror Mode, and Traditional Mode. However, no in-depth information has been provided about any of the modes.

Having a device that folds in half brings in a concern which everyone and anyone would have, that being the durability of the device as there is always a possibility of the smartphone snapping in half. The device is only being offered through AT&T in the U.S and the only announced priced is a monthly payment of $24.17 over a 30-month period with AT&T Next. The device will be available sometime in November. The good news is that customers in China, Europe, and Japan will also be able to get their hands on the Axon M.

Lixin Cheng, CEO of ZTE Mobile Devices said:

The ZTE Axon M is the beginning of a significant movement of smartphone capabilities, and ZTE is leading the way…The mobile technology ecosystem and consumer habits have evolved over the past several years, but the smartphone experience has only slightly varied throughout that time until today, with the introduction of the Axon M. Consumers need and expect more from their current smartphone and we are proud to collaborate with carriers around the world and AT&T in the U.S. to transform their mobile experience.
