It further optimizes the user's smartphone usage and performs tasks better. This year Huawei introduced their Mate 10 lineup with the key selling feature of bringing AI.
The new Mate 10 lineup is bringing everything that you can expect from a true flagship of this year but the AI is its standout feature amongst all. The new Mate 10 is definitely not as fancy as its other siblings Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Porsche design but still it is fascinated those who like the traditional phablets looks and design. The Mate 10 is beefy with a traditional headphone jack and it also supports memory expansion via MicroSD card.

The good thing is despite not having sleeky looks like the other two Mate 10 devices, still, it is bringing same sheer power under the hood. The Samsung's and Google's Assistants are software based but what Huawei is bringing it is actually the brain of the smartphone which brings neural network for machine learning and image recognition features. Like always, we compared the latest Mate 10 against a number of its competitors. The device emerges winner in number of aspects.
Now is the perfect time to closely dissect what Mate 10 is bringing on board to lure customers. The device is bringing a number of features which aren't available in other premium smartphones. We will further discuss its AI capabilities as well as what kind of benefits you will avail after getting Mate 10. Without any further ado, let's start with the design of Mate 10.
77.8 x 150.5 x 8.2 mm
5.9 inches - 2560x1440 px
For those who already used Mate 9, the latest Mate 10 won't be a problem for them as the latest device is also chunky like the predecessor. It can't be grabbed easily single-handed like iPhone 8 Plus or Galaxy Note 8. The device does not easily fit in your pocket but instead, you have to keep it in your bag. The chassis is once again made up of aluminum but the rear is made up of luring glass. It attracts fingerprints, so you have to take extra care of it. There is a free case straight out of the box but it fades the real beauty of this beast.
The device retains the physical home button with the fingerprint scanner embedded below it. This is one of the reasons why it has thicker bezels on top and bottom as opposed to Mate 10 Pro. Huawei smartphones fingerprints act pretty quickly, same is the case with the Mate 10. Unlike most of the flagships comes with either IP67 or IP68 certification. The latest Mate 10 has the IP57 certification which brings splash proof water resistance. You can take the risk to receive calls in the rain but you can't take your device during swimming in the pool. There is a mono speaker on the bottom alongside the earpiece. Both the speakers provide better-than-average flagships of this year.
Most of the manufacturers ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack this year but its good to see Mate 10 retains it, unlike its other siblings. The headphone jack is placed on the top edge whereas the bottom edge has USB Type-C connectivity port. The volume and power controllers are on the right edge. The Mate 10 will be released in four luring colors including the special brown, gold, black and pink. All these colors are striking but the unique brown is pretty special.Despite the fact, the glass rear gives it an amazing look but still it looks a bit dated in front of bezel-less Mate 10 Pro.
The Mate 10 features a gigantic display of 5.9-inches with an aspect ratio os 16:9 that's why it brings a large screen to watch videos and scrolling web. Huawei confirms the latest Mate 10 is featuring a new RGBW display which is 30% brighter than the predecessor and also it saves battery to juice up to 14%.
Although the RGBW display is not as good as OLED display still its contrast ratio and colors saturation is pretty good. Due to 16:9 aspect ratio, you will find thick bezels but the company managed to reduce them from edges as much as possible. While holding the device you will get the edge-to-edge display feeling. The device has significantly thick bezels on top and bottom.
One of the key selling aspects of Mate 10 is its hardware under the hood. The Mate 10 is powered up by the company's latest Kirin 970 chipset which is the most powerful chipset from Huawei so far. Alongside the chipset, it has neural processing unit to handle AI tasks separately. This chipset ensures user get most of the smartphone with better optimization with the help of Artifical intelligence.
It has definitely more power to better handle AI tasks to bring smooth AI experience. At the unveiling event, the company showcased the latest chipset can recognize images at a very rapid speed. The Leica certified dual rear cameras easily identify what you are looking. It will provide you details regarding the object your camera sensor is viewing.
The Octa-core chipset is accompanied with 4GB RAM and the base variant built-in storage is 64GB which is further expandable up to 256GB using MicroSD card. So the memory under the hood won't be an issue for customers. The device opens up the apps instantly and it is pretty much capable to handle hifi graphics games and continuos multi-tasking without any break. You won't disappoint with the sheer power of this handset at any stage.
|Screen resolution||1440 x 2560 pixels|
|Storage||64GB Expandable via MicroSD card|
|OS||Android Oreo with EMUI 8|
As OS the Mate 10 is the company's first flagship smartphone with the Android Oreo straight out of the box. It is not the stock OS like the Pixel 2 lineup but instead, the device has EMUI 8.0 layer over the stock Android Oreo. Before Mate 10 lineup the Huawei's custom UI layer was at EMUI 5.1, Huawei took a huge jump to reach 8.0. The company also stated the huge iteration brings a number of new features under the hood.
Huawei claims the new EMUI 8.0 is pretty significant upgrade over the predecessor. The new EMUI version brings a number of gestures apart from key features of Android Oreo. The split screen support is now expanded to more apps. Huawei EMUI has criticized due to the hefty amount of bloatware but the latest version brings the cleanest version of EMUI with few extra perks.
Huawei introduced a new Desktop mode which connects desktop with the smartphone seamlessly by just connecting with the USB-C to HDMI cable. There is a number of apps which are specially optimized for the dekstop mode. Instead of home buttons, the Mate 10 has a floating navigation menu which can be switched off as well.
Like most of the Huawei flagships, the Mate 10 is featuring dual Leica certified rear cameras. The dual rear sensors on Mate 10 seems pretty much similar to Huawei P10. The primary rear snapper is 12MP RGB lens whereas the secondary sensor is the 20MP monochrome lens. Both the sensors captures jointly to produce final results. The monochrome sensor captures in detail whereas the RGB sensor brings color. It is well-tested dual camera setup and the results of Mate 10 rear cameras are also worth appreciating.
The best thing about these sensors is their aperture of f/1.6. Both the sensors are bringing the world largest aperture on both the sensors which means the Mate 10 sensors captures good light even in low-light conditions. Most of the smartphones suffer in low-light conditions but that's not the case with the Mate 10. A new 4-in-1 hybrid autofocus is introduced with the Mate 10 for better and speedy autofocus. The AI and machine learning assist camera sensor as well to snap amazing photos.
The AI support allows the camera to detect which object it is shooting and also at the same time it adjust according to object, for instance, it will detect you are capturing launch, dinner or flowers/leaves. The good thing is if you don't like AI tweaks of your camera, you can change settings manually. The Mate 10 is pre-installed with fourteen scene modes but we can expect Huawei will be rolled out more in future.
Huawei opted a 4,000mAh battery cell to keep the Mate 10 lights on. Last year Mate 9 also has the similar battery under the hood. The device easily lasts more than one day on normal to heavy usage whereas on heavy usage it easily lasts the single day. The device comes with SuperCharge fast charging tech. Huawei claims their fast charging tech is 50% faster than Apple. The device charges up to 58% in sixty minutes.
Despite the fact, the Mate 10 has glass rear but it lacks wireless charging support. The inclusion of glass rear could prompt Huawei to use wireless charging in future.
As far as price and release is a concern the Chinese giant only announced the device pricing for Australia with a release from November 15th. The Mate 10 will cost AU$899 which is $710 at the current currency exchange rate for International customers. The device won't be released for the UK customers as the company already confirmed the Mate 10 Pro will be released exclusively. Just for the sake of comparison the last year Mate 9 was announced for $599.99 but this year the company increased the pricing significantly. At the moment it is still in the dark whether this device will be released to the US customers or not.
The Mate 10 keeps the traditional 3.5mm headphone as well as it allows memory expansion using MicroSD card. The Mate 10 comes with the same hardware as the Pro variant. It will fascinate those who are looking to grab a giant phablet with sheer power under the hood.
The AI features of Mate 10 are worth appreciable despite the fact it is still in early stages. The Mate 10 comes with a number of apps to get full use of AI power. The Microsoft translator on Mate 10 gives you near real-time translation thanks to NPU. However whether the device can be used as a daily driver, it is totally dependent on the user. They like a smartphone with giant display all the time, if yes then the Huawei Mate 10 is pretty much capable to be your next flagship companion.
