Samsung Galaxy Note 8

This year Samsung made a huge leap forward in terms of design language. The first smartphone of the year Galaxy S8 comes with a new glass/metal sandwich design which stuns the market with its gorgeous looks and ultra-thin bezels on the front. Samsung brought the similar design for the Galaxy Note 8 with more refinements. The single-rear snapper is upgraded with dual rear snappers, the display of Galaxy Note 8 is dual curved from edges. The design is pretty awesome due to its sleek looks with solid metal chassis. Samsung ditched their front-facing logo, so its pretty clean an all front-facing glass. The rear doesn't have something extraordinary but still, it looks eye-catching.

The rear side is adorned with dual rear cameras, it is the first Samsung smartphone with dual cameras on the rear. The dual sensors are placed horizontally with LED flashlight and rear fingerprint scanner right next to it. Samsung's branding on the rear side is below the dual cameras which doesn't look bad at all. The rear side edges are gently curved so that the device can be grabbed easily single-handily.

The devices come with four physical buttons. The power button is placed on the right edge, the volume rockers and dedicated Bixby AI buttons are on the left edge. The 3.5mm headphone jack is on the bottom along with USB-C port and mono speaker. The hybrid SIM slot is on the top edge. Despite the fact it has 2:1 display but still the company managed to have the fingerprint scanner on the front at the most convenient position.

Whether you fingerprint scanner on the front or not but certainly Huawei did a commendable job here to make it possible. Undoubtedly the V30 is so far the most striking flagship smartphone from LG not only in terms of performance but also in terms of looks. LG also tried to overdo anything to make the V30 impressive instead the design queues are special on its own.

The LG V30 released in four luring colors including Lavender Violet, Moroccan Blue, Aurora Black and Cloud Silver. Unfortunately, despite opting any color the front of LG V30 will remain Black. The black front has an advantage as it doesn't visibly shows the front camera, sensors, and speaker. The overall front looks quite clean and beautiful.

The rear edges of V30 are curved beautifully from the edges which makes it an easy device to grasp despite having the large display on the front. Another plus point of the design is lack of protruding camera setup like most of the devices. The dual sensors are quite beautifully embedded within the body with dual-tone LED flashlight placed vertically right next to it. The dual rear snappers are horizontally placed.

Due to all front-facing display, it has the circular fingerprint scanner on the rear below the dual cameras. The volume controllers are on the left edge whereas the SIM tray is on the left edge. Up front the U11 Plus design is pretty much similar to most of the flagships with 2:1 display, however, the rear design is indeed a crowd standout feature.

All aforementioned smartphones have something special in terms of design to attract customers. All fall in the same category of flagship smartphones but the devices has aspects which are similar and different in all the devices. The first thing is all the device chassis is made up of metal with glass covering the rear side. Almost all top-tier devices have glass/metal sandwich design. This certainly doesn't mean the unibody metal design isn't striking anymore but instead, the glass/metal sandwich is the latest trend in design. The glass rear brings glossy finish which looks more premium.

However, the smartphone with glass rear also attracts fingerprints which means you will have to take extra care of the device. The glass rear isn't sturdy at all that's why you can't take risk of dropping it on the ground. The glass rear shine slightly fades away once you took it out of the box.

The second aspect common to all the aforementioned devices is that all OEMs didn't try to overdo anything instead they keep the basics glass/metal sandwich design language. Every smartphone has something special, the glass S8 features dual curved display, the Mate 10 series come with the attractive stripe on the rear cameras, the HTC's U11 liquid glass surface and pressure sensitive body is the standout feature. The LG V30 is overall a luring package with embedded rear cameras, circular fingerprint scanner, and sleek looks. Last but not the least the iPhone X is the Apple's first attempt in the bezel-less smartphones market, the company did a good job in making their 10th-anniversary design special. The attractive glass rear with vertical dual rear snappers look pretty amazing, it gives premium feel in hand.

My favorite is the HTC U11 Plus with its non-headphone jack design for one reason and the pressure sensitive edges, which is the USP of the HTC phones.

I'm not too confident about the Huawei Mate 10 in terms of designing, but yes, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a must on this list. The looks are attractive and so is the overall design profile.
