A while ago, Finnish company HMD Global confirmed that it will update all the Nokia-branded smartphones with Android Oreo. The software, which is already available for Nokia 8, will soon be available for Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 that are currently receiving beta updates. However, as per a new tweet, the pocket-friendly Nokia 2 will also now be receiving the latest Android operating system.
When asked about the plans for Android Oreo for Nokia 2, Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, responded with a tweet mentioning the company’s plans to update the phone with Android 8.1 Oreo with the help of Android Go, a lightweight version of Android optimized for devices with 1GB of RAM.
Hi! It will receive Android Oreo. 1GB RAM devices will be supported on 8.1 release where many of the Android Go memory management improvements will be integrated. Nokia 2 performance will only get better over time!— Juho Sarvikas (@sarvikas) December 28, 2017
The Nokia 2 will skip Android 8.0 update and directly receive Android 8.1 Oreo. The executive mentions that the device cannot be upgraded to the Android Go program, but the company will include performance improvements based on Android 8.1 Oreo in the maintenance releases. The upcoming Nokia 1 is supposed to be the first smartphone that will launch as a part of Google’s Android Go program.
As for the specifications of Nokia 2, the device features a 5-inch LCD display powered by Qualcomm’s 1.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 212 processor. It packs 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage, which can be expanded via microSD card. The device has an 8-megapixel rear camera accompanied by a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat and is fuelled by a 4,100 mAh battery.
