Most likely Sony will be unveiling at least one flagship smartphone at this year MWC show. The company recently rolled out invites for the Monday 26th February event. The company press conference will be at 8.30am CET. There are rumors the company could announce two variants flagships in Q1 2018, however it isn't officially confirmed yet. If the latest info is accurate, we can expect Sony Xperia flagship at MWC 2018 with a release in late March or early April.
In last few years, Sony changed their smartphone name at a rapid pace that's why it is pretty difficult to guess what's next from the company. As per latest rumors, Sony is going to announce two flagships, the first device will be Xperia XA Pro bearing model number H8541 and the second flagship XZ2 that will be the direct successor of last year flagship XZ1. The alleged XZ2 model number is H8216.
Last year Sony announced couple of flagships. The Xperia XZ Premium was announced at MWC 2017 as a successor variant of Z5 Premium. The key selling feature of this device was 4K display with top-tier flagship hardware, it was indeed the first flagship announced with Snapdragon 835 but its release was delayed until June due to chipset availability. In the second half of the year, Sony launched XZ1 as latest flagship offering with Full HD display and latest hardware.
Now as per latest rumors, Sony XZ Premium successor is due as it is one year old. It is expected to be announced as XZ Pro. The second device XZ1 is just six months old but Sony did update such kind of devices so early in past as well. So far it is still not confirmed which device Sony will launch as next premium smartphone at MWC 2018.
Sony using OmniBalance design for quite some time since the original Xperia Z smartphone. Since then almost all smartphones from Sony followed the traditional OmniBalance design trend. You can easily identify Sony smartphone on first look. All changes so far are incremental but with the recently announced Xperia XA2 series, Sony tried to bring something slightly different with slightly trimmed bezels.
At the moment it is still in the dark what kind of new design change Sony planned for this year smartphones. However, so far leaked info suggests Sony is yet not ready to enter the 2:1 display arena. The XA2 hints Sony might reduce the top and bottom bezels to give their smartphones a new look but still bezels are significantly thick as opposed to rival devices.
Another interesting aspect of design could be lack of 3.5mm headphone jack. As per latest FCC filings, Sony's upcoming Xperia smartphone will come with a USB-C dongle. The Xperia smartphone with model number H8541 specs listing appeared online recently which suggests upcoming smartphone display will have higher screen-to-body ratio than the last year XZ Premium.
The listing further suggests IP65/68 ratings which means it will be water and dust resistance like most of the 2018 flagships. The well-known tipsters are so far silent regarding the Sony's upcoming flagship smartphone but we can expect to hear more about the device in coming days.
As we've mentioned above Sony yet not ready to announce a smartphone with 2:1 display that's why almost all reports suggest Sony will stick to traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. The Sony smartphone bearing model number H8116 rumored to have 4K display panel with 3840 x 2160 pixels screen resolution. Another plus point of this display will be OLED display panel instead of LCD.
The H8541 reportedly will have a 5.7-inches display with a 4K display. It would be surprising to see Sony will bring giant flagship with 16:9 aspect ratio display. Sony UX Planning head also stated that Sony smartphones with 4K OLED display will be announced "very soon" and the company is investing heavily in this tech.
The H8216 alleged specs sheet once again suggests Full HD display panel of 5.48-inches with 1920 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. The report further suggests smartphone overall dimensions will be similar to XZ1. It would be interesting to see how Sony will add a larger display to small body retaining the traditional aspect ratio. Both the devices will have HDR support.
Most of the details regarding the Sony upcoming flagships are still in dark. So far the leaked info suggests few details regarding the specs sheet of H8541 most likely will be released as XZ Pro and XZ2 (H8216). The H8541 will be featuring the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB RAM and 64GB native storage. For connectivity, it will have USB-C port. A 3,420mAh battery cell will be on board to keep its lights, it will also support Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0. Another leaked specs sheet suggests Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.
The first leaked specs sheet is quite surprising to see flagship running older 2017 hardware in Q1 2018. The second H8216 leaked specs info suggests Snapdragon 845 SoC with 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable native storage. It will be lit up by a 3,130mAh battery with Qualcomm's Quick Charge support. As OS both the devices is pre-installed with Android Oreo 8.1. Most of the details are in dark that's why we will recommend taking with a grain of salt.
As per latest info, the Sony Xperia XZ Pro will be featuring dual camera setup on the rear side. The primary snapper will be a 18MP module with 1.33µm pixel size whereas the secondary sensor will be 12MP with 1.38µm pixel size. Up front, a 13MP sensor will be on board to take selfies. So far the info isn't from reliable sources instead based on latest rumors.
Those who are unaware Sony Xperia was the first smartphone to have slow-motion videography at 960 frames per second. We can expect Sony might improve slow-motion videography with this year flagship. The video recording at 960fps is still not fully functional due to the limitation of the tech but it seems like Samsung will introduce a better slow-motion camera with their TRI-ISOCELL camera modules of upcoming flagships Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.
Sony smartphones are known for their top-notch video and photography, So we can expect a solid setup this year. Most likely Sony won't easily allow the Samsung to overthrow its crown of slow-motion video capturing capabilities. Sony is still one of the largest camera sensor producers in the market, it would be interesting how Sony responds to Samsung's latest camera tech.
Though at the moment it is still not confirmed whether Sony is going to announce flagship at the MWC or not but considering the history Sony usually take MWC and IFA stages to showcase their latest offerings after every six months. Sony has a tradition of announcing new smartphones twice per year.
Now as far as release is a concern, unfortunately, Sony isn't known for releasing smartphones immediately instead the company took at least a month to start releasing their latest smartphones. So if Sony announces flagship Xperia smartphone at MWC, we can expect it to be released in late April or in early May. Sony flagships usually fall between $750 to $850, most likely same will be the case for this year Xperia premium smartphone.
