Like always, whenever a smartphone announcement is inching closer the rumors start popping up which certainly gives tech enthusiasts a pretty good idea about what to expect from the upcoming smartphone. Same is the case with the Nokia 9 which is in rumors from last few weeks and now rumors mill is producing latest info on the continous basis which clearly indicates the next big Nokia flagship launch inching closer. We usually roundup all details regarding the upcoming flagship ahead of launch, today we will round up all the info we know so far regarding the upcoming Nokia 9. Most likely the upcoming Nokia branded flagship will be announced as Nokia 9.
The Nokia 9 name popped up online back in first half of 2017 when it was not confirmed what will be the name of first Android running Nokia flagship. Later on, the rumors suggest Nokia 8 which later on turned true when HMD global launched Nokia 8 in August last year. After the Nokia 8 announcement as the first flagship, we had seen tons of rumors regarding the Nokia 9 as another flagship smartphone from Nokia. The Nokia 9 exist as another flagship smartphone whose announcement delayed till the first half of 2018.
The well-known tipster Roland Quandt also confirmed two Nokia smartphones including the entry-level Nokia 2. Recently two Nokia branded smartphones appeared at FCC. The first one is a low-end smartphone expected to be announced as Nokia 2 whereas the secondary smartphone is top-tier smartphone bearing model number TA-1005. This device internal codename is Avatar.
There definitely is another Nokia smartphone coming soon from HMD Global apart from the Nokia 2. No idea when, but there is.— Roland Quandt (@rquandt) September 20, 2017
The alleged Nokia 9 passes Chinese 3C certification with model number TA-1042 whereas the same device appeared at FCC with TA-1005. This indicates HMD global have plans to launch different variants in different regions. The recent certifications clearly indicate its launch event isn't far away. Nokia confirms their arrival at the MWC 2018 show. The event is scheduled for February 25 in afternoon. There are chances the company could officially announce Nokia 9 initially for China ahead of official global unveiling.
There are a number of reports suggesting upcoming Nokia 9 will have 5.5-inches or 5.7-inches display but thanks to recent FCC listing it is now confirmed Nokia 9 will have 5.5-inches display. The last year Nokia 8 features a 5.3-inches display which was criticized for being below average than most of the flagships announced last year. So its a welcome change from Nokia with a slightly large panel. Like most of the flagships, it will have Quad HD screen resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels.
The Nokia 9 is expected to be the first smartphone from the company with the OLED display panel. As per the latest report from Compareraja, the Nokia 9 OLED display will be curved from the edges with an aspect ratio of 16:9. There are few renders with ultra-thin bezels on the front with the fingerprint scanner on the rear. This creates doubts about 2:1 display but the latest reports from Chinese media suggests Nokia 5 OLED display aspect ratio will remain traditional 16:9.
Unfortunately, the FCC listing didn't reveal any details regarding the display apart from the size. The OLED display possibility is certainly will be appreciated as most of the OEMs are now switching to OLEDs for better vibrant display. The OLED panels have deep blacks with higher colors saturation. The last year Nokia 8 has an LCD display so it's worth appreciating the upgrade. It is almost confirmed the upcoming Nokia 9 will have a 5.5-inches panel but screen resolution and aspect ratio yet not confirmed from authentic sources.
As far as design is a concern, there are a number of rumors which suggests different design language. One of the leaked renders suggests Nokia 9 will have all metal body like its predecessor. It will be IP68 certified which means it will be able to resist 1.5 meters deep water for 30 minutes without any damage. The latest leak also showcases full front-facing display without any physical button on the front which means the fingerprint scanner is on the rear side.
Ahead of these recent leaks, we had seen an alleged Nokia 9 with glass and metal sandwich design. Not just that the display is dual curved from edges which makes it pretty close to Galaxy S7 Edge. If HMD global brings glass and metal sandwich design for their flagship it won't be surprising at all because we have seen most of the OEMs adopted such kind of design in 2017.
A tipster claims the Nokia 9 dimensions are 140.9 x 72.9 x 7.5mm and it lacks 3.5mm headphone jack. The alleged dimensions don't seem accurate because even the devices with lowest bezels have the length around 150mm whereas the Nokia 9 is expected to have thick bezels. It won't be possible to fit in a 5.5-inches display of 16:9 aspect ratio in a compact body with a 140.9mm length, So we will recommend to take it with a grain of salt.
In our view Nokia 9 with a flat 5.5-inches display is pretty much on cards, IP68 certification is also expected because all smartphones of this league are already water and dust resistant.
Almost all OEMs announced premium flagships with dual rear snappers, Samsung also joined the arena with the Galaxy Note 8. Almost all leaks and rumors suggest dual rear snappers for the upcoming Nokia 9. Recently a tipster claimed that Nokia 9 will be featuring dual 22MP sensors whereas the front-facing snapper will be 12MP. What makes this setup special is all lenses are jointly produced with Carl Zeiss.
Both the alleged rear cameras have more megapixels than any other dual camera smartphone in the market. Nokia Lumia 1020 was released a couple of years ago as a camera-centric device with 41MP rear snapper. As per latest leak, Nokia 9 will have primary snapper of 12MP whereas the secondary module will be 13MP. Up front, the selfie-camera will be 5MP.
As far as the secondary sensor is a concern, it seems like it will either provide wide-angle shots or telephoto zoom up to 2x. We recently have seen Nokia updated the Nokia 5 camera app with the Android Oreo beta with these two new options which could provide us a good hint what's coming next.
Whether Nokia 9 brings the telephoto lens or wide-angle lens both the scenarios require dual rear snappers. It would be interesting what HMD opts for the next flagship. Last year HMD global followed Huawei's footstep and brought monochrome sensor alongside the RGB one. This setup captures good pictures even in low-light conditions.
Most likely the upcoming Nokia 9 will have dual rear snappers like the last year Nokia 8 but it is still not confirmed what will be the megapixels count. We will recommend taking the megapixels detail with a grain of salt.
As far as battery cell is a concern there is only one kind of rumor which suggests Nokia 9 will have a fairly large 3,800mAh battery cell. For connectivity, it will have USB-C port and it will support Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4 for fast charging. If the leak is accurate it would be a good addition to have such large battery cell with 5.5-inches display. Nokia 8 comes with fast charging, So it won't be surprising to see Nokia 9 with fast charging support.
Being the latest flagship smartphone everyone is expecting the Nokia 9 will have top of the line hardware. What we have heard so far the Nokia 9 will be featuring Qualcomm's Octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC with 6GB RAM. This configuration is shared by a couple of sources and it isn't far away from becoming reality. If this is accurate the upcoming Nokia 9 will have the same chipset as Xperia XZ Premium and Galaxy S8 with more RAM on board. However, we have to admit this setup isn't the latest one because buyers are looking forward to Snapdragon 845 chipset driven smartphones. The aforementioned hardware setup looks dated considering the latest standards.
One of the tipsters claims that Nokia 9 will have Adreno 540 on board as Graphics processing unit. The alleged Nokia 9 so far appeared in a couple of Benchmark tests and both the devices have Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB and 8GB RAM. At the moment it is still not confirmed whether Nokia will launch Snapdragon 845 SoC driven smartphone in the first half of the year.
The good thing is Nokia isn't bringing thick custom UI layers over the stock Android OS instead they have minor additions to the stock flavor. The simple UI over stock version allows HMD Global to roll out latest Android updates at a rapid speed than most of the OEMs in the market. We can expect somewhat similar clean software for the Nokia 9. It is rumored to have Android Oreo 8.1 straight out of the box.
Nokia 9 is expected to bring a number of exciting features to lure customers as the company has plans to splash big with their second flagship smartphone. The Nokia 9 rumored to have two security features fingerprint and iris scanner pretty much similar to Samsung Galaxy S8.
Like the Nokia 8, the device will have upgraded OZO audio setup for the better audio experience. This setup provides surrounding audio effect while recording thanks to four microphones on board. It is still in dark how many mics the device will have to capture 3D audio. As these additional features info isn't from reliable sources that's why we will recommend to take it with a grain of salt.
The Nokia 9 rumored to cost higher than last year Nokia 8. There is two kind of rumors, the first kind suggests the Nokia 9 will be available for 3,699 Yuan in China which is $560 at current currency exchange rate whereas the top of the line 128GB variant at 4,199 Yuan ($635). The second report suggests Nokia 9 will be available in the US for $699 which is AU$935 for the Australian buyers and £565 in the UK. The report further suggests 749 Euros price tag in Europe. The price tag rumors indicate there will be two variants based on native storage.
The rumor which suggests $560 seems legit due to being the latest as well as considering the rumored specs sheet we can't expect Nokia 9 to have the price tag like premium flagships from Samsung and other companies. At the end, we would like to hear our readers thoughts in the comments section below regarding the upcoming Nokia 9 flagship rumors roundup. Stay tuned, we will keep you updated.
