Xiaomi Mi Mix and Mi 5 currently being tested for Android 8.0 Oreo

23 February 2018 4

Chinese smartphone manufacturer is well known to deliver late software updates to its devices. In a time where Android Oreo is spreading in the market, the company recently unveiled the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro with Android Nougat onboard. While the company does have a beta program rolling Android 8.0 Oreo for the flagship Mi 6 and the Mi Mix 2, it seems that the company hasn’t forgotten about older devices.

As per a new report by XDA, Xiaomi is testing Android 8.0 Oreo on two of its older flagships – the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the Mi Mix. The news is based on firmware files obtained by Funky Huawei Club, a website that offers services for Huawei-branded devices. An Android flagship is traditionally entitled to receive at least two major software update in its lifetime, so the Oreo one is a long-time coming. Let’s take a look at the specifications of the two devices.

Xiaomi Mi 5 specifications:

  • 5.15-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080p) IPS display
  • Snapdragon 820 SoC
  • 3/4GB of RAM
  • 32/64GB/128GB of internal storage
  • 16MP rear camera, 4MP front-facing camera
  • 3,000 mAh battery
  • Currently runs MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat

Xiaomi Mi Mix specifications:

  • 6.44inch Full HD (2040 x 1080p) IPS display with 17:9 aspect ratio
  • Snapdragon 821 SoC
  • 4/6GB of RAM
  • 128/256GB of internal storage
  • 16MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera
  • 4,400 mAh battery
  • Currently runs MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat

Xiaomi is expected to launch the Mi Mix 2s and the flagship Mi 7 at the MWC 2018 event that will take place in Barcelona. Hopefully, the devices will run Android Oreo out of the box.
