Asus ZenFone 5 announced with a heavy emphasis on AI at the MWC 2018

27 February 2018 3

Asus has finally unveiled the much-awaited, iPhone X look-alike ZenFone 5 - the company's latest family of devices at its #BackTo5 unveiling event at the MWC 2018. The devices carry an all-screen design, with a special emphasis on camera performance and AI.

The ZenFone 5 family has three devices: ZenFone 5 Lite, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z.

The ZenFone 5 Lite comes with a 6" display with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels (18:9 aspect ratio). There are four cameras on all the phones, two at the front (20 MP) and two at the back (16 MP). Both the cameras have a 120 degree view, allowing for much wider shots. The ZenFone 5 Lite is powered by a Snapdragon 630 processor and 4 GB RAM.

The ZenFone 5 carries a Snapdragon 636 along with 6 GB of RAM, and comes with a screen aspect ratio of 19:9. There's a notch at the center top like the iPhone X, but Asus claims it is 26% smaller than the "Fruit Phone X". The ZenFone 5Z is a beefier model, carrying a Snapdragon 845 processor, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage.

A major focus of the ZenFone 5 family is AI, which is incorporated into most major functions of the devices. There's an AI component to the cameras, allowing for automatic correction and enhancement of photos to make them look great based on the setting. There's an intelligent battery manager, which charges the battery up to 80% during the night and charges full to 100% as you're about to wake up, so that the battery health and lifespan can be preserved. Even the ringtone volume is controlled by AI - louder when you're in a noisy area and quieter in your office or home.

Asus has even come with with its own version of Apple's Animoji, called ZenMoji. You can conduct an entire live-stream through an animated emoji, and even put up a load of filters.

Asus CEO laid out the schedule of availability of the devices at the event. The ZenFone 5 Lite will be available in March, whereas the ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z will be available in May and June respectively. The price bar on the 5Z with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage has been set at an unbelievable 475 Euros ($580).
