Sony Xperia XZ3 unveiled with OLED display and Android Pie at IFA 2018

30 August 2018 0

As expected, Sony has taken wraps off the Xperia XZ3 at the IFA 2018 event in Berlin. It is essentially the second Android flagship from the company and is the latest attempt at reviving its struggling smartphone business. Like any other high-end Sony device, it also comes with a number of fancy features that would make you go wow in the first appearance.

The Xperia Z3 is the company's first smartphone with the OLED display panel which happens to be 6-inches with Quad HD+ (2880 x 1440 pixels) resolution and curves on the sides. To make the display better and different than the competition, Sony has added BRAVIA OLED TV technologies along with the advanced X-Reality engine for mobiles. This latter tech is said to upscale the SDR content to HDR quality even when streaming.

Under the hood, it has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. It offers 64GB of UFS internal storage with microSD cards support up to 512GB. On the back, it has a 19-megapixel Motion Eye camera with Exmor RS memory-stacked sensor, predictive hybrid autofocus, and f/2.0 aperture. It is capable of shooting 4K HDR videos and 960fps slow-motion videos. There is a 13-megapixel front camera with f/1.9 aperture and wide-angle lens.

The whole package is powered by a 3330mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. It also has Sony's proprietary features like Stamina Mode, Smart Stamina, Qnovo Adaptive Charging, and Battery Care. It will be running Android 9 Pie out of the box which will make it one of the early few phones to run the latest Android version out of the box.

Sony has paid good attention to the audio aspect as well. The Xperia XZ3 will come with S-Force Front Surround Sound speakers which are claimed to be the loudest speakers on a Sony phone yet. There is support for Hi-Res Audio, LDAC, DSEE HX, ClearAudio+, and Qualcomm's aptX HD audio. In connectivity options, it has Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, fingerprint scanner, and USB 3.1 Gen 1 port. And yes, it does offer IP65/IP68 certification for dust and water resistance.

The Sony Xperia X3 will go on sale starting end of the September 2018 in selected markets worldwide. It has been released in Black, White Silver, Forest Green, and Bordeaux Red color variants.
