Amazon India has officially announced the support for the Hindi language on its website and smartphone apps. This is the first time that an e-commerce website has done something like this as all the major players including Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Paytm Mall are only available in English.
During the announcement, Amazon revealed that the new language selection option will become available on the Android app via a server-side change. It means one does not have to wait for an update to use the same. The Hindi language support is currently in Beta stage which is the reason it is quite limited for now. Once the language is selected, you will find the home screen banners, categories, top deals, and important information for a particular product in Hindi. The team will be expanding it to other parts of the app including reviews and Q&A with time. As for the web and iOS app, the Hindi language beta will be released in near future.
The decision to add a local language is Amazon India's attempt at stepping up in the fight against Walmart-owned Flipkart. It will also help it reach those million users who are not comfortable with using an app or a website in English. It revealed that about 50% of its users who were interested in a language other than English preferred Hindi. This is the reason they rolled out Hindi language support first which will be followed by other Indic languages later.
Manish Tiwary, Amazon India's VP of Category Management said,
"Our aim is to ensure any customer can find anything they want on Amazon.in, anytime and anywhere, irrespective of the language they speak or where they came from. Launch of the Hindi shopping experience is a significant step towards bringing the next 100 million customers online. The first Indian language launch will enable crores of Hindi-preferring customers across India to shop in their preferred language."
