Qualcomm has officially unveiled Snapdragon 215 Mobile Platform as the newest chipset meant for super affordable smartphones. These are the phones which cost anywhere between $70 to $120 and are packed with basic specifications. The latest budget processor brings the usual performance improvements but also comes loaded with a bunch of new features.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 is the first processor in the Snapdragon 2XX series to feature 64-bit architecture and support for 64-bit apps. It is claimed to be about 50% faster in terms of performance when compared to the predecessor. There is Adreno 308 GPU for handling graphics-intensive tasks like playing video games. This combination is said to be capable of offering over 10 hours of video playback with ease.
It comes with dual ISPs which means the Snapdragon 215 chipset can be used for offering dual rear cameras on a $100 device. This is another first for any Snapdragon 2XX series processor. The single rear shooter can be up to 13-megapixels with support for depth bokeh effect shots and 1080p video recording. The display resolution support is up to HD+ (1560 x 720 pixels) and 19:9 aspect ratio.
The new processor features integration with Qualcomm Snapdragon X5 LTE modem for dual VoLTE connectivity support. It is claimed to offer download speeds up to 150Mbps which means faster connectivity. Other noteworthy features include dual SIM support, NFC payments, EVS voice calls, WiFi, and Quick Charge fast charging.
Qualcomm said that Snapdragon 215-powered smartphones are expected to arrive in the second half of 2019 which means anytime starting next month. It should be noted that even though the processor offers all those new features, it will be up to the particular OEMs to enable any or all of them.
