Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus is aimed at gaming smartphones and VR

15 July 2019 0

Qualcomm has a track record of announcing one flagship processor per year but for the first time, it has taken a slightly different route. It has now announced Snapdragon 855 Plus Mobile Platform which is a slightly improved version of the Snapdragon 855 from late last year. The new chipset is aimed at delivering the fastest and more powerful gaming performance and VR experiences.

The biggest difference between Snapdragon 855 and newer Snapdragon 855 Plus is in terms of the CPU and GPU clock speed. Qualcomm has overclocked both with the latest offering with the goal of delivering more performance. It has Kryo 485 cores overclocked at 2.96GHz as compared to 2.84GHz on the standard processor. As for Adreno 640 GPU, the graphics performance is said to have received a 15% increment over the predecessor.

Apart from these two changes, both processors feature the same set of hardware components including Snapdragon X50 5G modem. This will allow smartphone makers to use the chipset in devices with 5G capabilities. It has the fourth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine which essentially means better AI performance. The processor also comes with Snapdragon Elite Gaming Experience suite of hardware and software tools intended at offering smoothest and fastest possible gaming experience.

Qualcomm says that it is hoping to see Snapdragon 855 Plus-powered smartphones arriving in the second half of 2019. Since it is a flagship processor with a focus on gaming, we should be seeing premium gaming oriented smartphones. The new processor should also help OEMs differentiate between their gaming phone and standard Android flagship.

Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm's VP for Product Management said,

“Snapdragon 855 Plus will raise the bar for elite gamers with the increase in CPU and GPU performance and elevate experiences for 5G, gaming, AI and XR, which is something our OEM customers look to us to deliver. Snapdragon 855 Plus is our most advanced mobile platform to date and will build upon the success of the 2019 Android flagship Snapdragon 855 5G mobile platform.”
