OnePlus CEO confirms new 5G phone coming this year

15 August 2019 0

The current generation OnePlus lineup mainly includes OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro but there is one more device called OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. It is same as the standard "Pro" model but with extra support for 5G connectivity. And now, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that they are working on a new 5G smartphone for the year.

Lau made the revelation in an exclusive conversation with Financial Times publication. He said that the new OnePlus 5G smartphone will be made official by the end of this year. It means we can expect an announcement to be made anytime from September to December 2019.

One of the major differences between the two 5G phones will be that the upcoming one will get a wider release. The existing OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is restricted to select markets in Europe and is currently available only in the United Kingdom. The newer version will be coming to more countries and thus more fans will be able to get their hands on one.

In the conversation, Lau said:

"If you want to be a premium phone in 2020, you have to be equipped with 5G technology. We believe with the development of 5G technology next year we can have a better performance. With the upcoming 5G era approaching, we are going to invest more."

He did not offer any more details about the phone but considering the track record and recent leaks, this upcoming 5G phone could actually be the "T" version. The naming would depend on whether OnePlus plans to release both OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro variants or only the OnePlus 7T Pro model. We will have to wait for the time being to get more details about the upcoming phones.
