YouTube removing direct messaging feature after September 18

21 August 2019 0

YouTube is killing off the direct messaging feature of its app as early as next month. The support page where Google announced the discontinuation doesn’t include the reason behind the same but it says YouTube will now focus on improving the public conversations.

It appears that the feature that allowed users to share videos via direct message on YouTube with their contacts wasn’t a success actually. In a heads up post, the company mentioned,

We’re constantly reevaluating our priorities and have decided to discontinue YouTube’s native direct messaging feature while we focus on improving public conversations.

For now, YouTube has started notifying users that the Messages feature on YouTube will go away after September 18, 2019.

The company may decide to bring this feature back something in the future. But it’s just a guess, so you would rather like to avoid believing in it. The removal isn’t going to be a big harm to the users. Many may not know about it and many would not even bother. YouTube introduced this feature two years back and also brought a major update last year when YouTube Messages rolled out to the web. The direct messaging feature allowed users to share content internal while in the app only.

A feature arrived a year after rather gained much traction and is still very popular among the creators. It’s the YouTube Stories that offer Instagram and Snapchat-like experiences.

After September 18, the Message on YouTube feature will disappear and those who have been using this feature and sharing the content frequently with the friends and family will not be able to do so. It’s fine because you till be having more options to share, like the good old method, clicking on Share and sharing on the “social network icon.” But, you would need to leave the app for dropping the video link to your friends’ message box on other social media apps.
