Uber has officially ventured into the on-demand staffing industry with the launch of Uber Works. It is an app aimed at helping shift-based workers find employers with jobs matching their shifts and skillsets. It is said to be under development for over a year but has now been released for everyone in Chicago. The team has plans to expand it to other cities and markets in the future.
The Uber Works app will have all the details related to available gigs. It means a user will be able to check the type of work, a number of shifts, time to be spent per shift, payment details, location, and information about the employer. These criteria can also be used as filters for narrowing down available job options. It will even tell if the workers are supposed to attend shifts in a specific attire.
The app comes with time tracking functionality so that workers can keep a tab on their shifts. It will allow them to add check-in time, break time, and time for logging out. While this will be appreciated by all workers, it should be more helpful for those who work multiple shifts in a day or work more than one job.
Uber says that it will be providing a reliable pool of vetted and qualified workers to employers. As for workers, it will ensure that they get paid on time and transparency in the work. Uber Works is a separate application which you will need to install on your Android or iOS device if you wish to make use of it. But as said in the beginning, it is currently limited to Chicago, United States.
This is not the first time Uber is going beyond its primary business of on-demand cab booking. It already has a food delivery app called Uber Eats that is available around various countries in the world. Most recently, it announced a major overhaul for the main Uber app with the goal of offering a better and more convenient user experience. Its ultimate goal is to merge all Uber services within a single app for one-stop access.
