Netflix confirms it is testing variable video playback speed feature

29 October 2019 0

Netflix has officially confirmed that it testing a new variable video playback speed feature. The feature was first spotted by an Android Police reader who shared a screenshot of the feature in action. Once the publication published a report that the feature is under testing, Netflix offered an official statement on the matter.

This new feature will allow Netflix users to adjust video playback speed like it is possible on YouTube. As per the shared screenshot, available options include 0.5x, 0.75x, 1x (normal), 1.25x, and 1.5x. It means a user will be able to choose whether to make a TV show episode or a movie go faster or slower, although we don't know why would you opt for the latter.

In an official statement, Netflix said:

"We’re always experimenting with new ways to help members use Netflix. This test makes it possible to vary the speed at which people watch shows on their mobiles. As with any test, it may not become a permanent feature on Netflix."

The last line of the statement is not surprising as the public rollout of the feature will depend on the feedback from beta testers. If Netflix sees that testers are using the features quite frequently and it is working as intended, only then it will give a green light to the mass rollout. Nevertheless, we will keep you updated about the situation.
