OnePlus started off its smartphone business by releasing only one phone per year. It shifted to launching two phones per year in 2016 where the second phone was a slightly enhanced "T" model. But this year, it not only launched the usually expected OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T but also unveiled completely new OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T Pro. Now, we finally have an official statement from OnePlus on changing product release strategy.
In an exclusive conversation with The Times of India (Tech), OnePlus CEO Pete Lau revealed that they will stick with the strategy of releasing two phones annually. The reason behind the decision is that OnePlus has been able to sell phones in good numbers. He added that OnePlus will release an affordable model and a high-end premium model.
Lau said,
“I think moving forward we are going to — at least for now — stick with current strategy by introducing two products; wherein one will be affordable and the other one be priced higher.”
As per the latest Counterpoint Research report, OnePlus is currently the number one premium smartphone brand in the Indian smartphone market. It has an impressive 43% market share which puts it way ahead of closest competitors Samsung and Apple. The two global market leaders have slightly above 15% share each in the Indian market space.
It seems like as long as OnePlus keeps reporting phones in good numbers and maintains a good lead in the premium segment, we will continue to see two phones per year from the brand. We have already heard leaks related to OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro smartphones that will be unveiled next year.
