We know that 5G is the next big thing for smartphone makers and like the rest of them, Vivo has plans to make most of the opportunity. Vivo has set a goal of releasing at least five new 5G smartphones in 2020. The announcement was made by Qin Fei, General Manager of Vivo Communications Research Insititute, at a press conference in China.
In an attempt to differentiate from most of the competition, Vivo will focus on budget and mid-range segments while releasing new 5G phones. It essentially means that Vivo 5G phones will cost cheaper than devices from other brands. This could help Vivo attract a significant number of buyers as we have seen most 5G phones are really expensive, especially when compared to their 4G LTE counterparts.
Vivo has teamed up with Qualcomm to achieve its goal of releasing cheaper 5G phones. It has set a target of not crossing the RMB 2,000 (about $286) price mark in China. It goes without saying that the choice of processor will play a crucial role in achieving the goal as well as convincing buyers to purchase the phone. The latter is more important as it could be hard to attract buyers with 5G as a special feature and an underwhelming processor choice.
Qualcomm has already revealed its plans to release 5G-powered Snapdragon 6- and Snapdragon 7- series processors. These new chipsets will be released next year with a focus on bringing 5G connectivity to the mid-range segment. This is similar to what Vivo is proposing and thus a collaboration between the two makes perfect sense. As of now, Vivo has two 5G phones named Vivo NEX 3 5G and iQOO Pro 5G and both are on the expensive side of the price spectrum.
