Realme is one of the fastest-growing smartphone brands as it registered a whopping 400% year-over-year growth last year. One of the reasons behind its immense success has been its ability to deliver phones at a significantly affordable price. It also means that Realme must be operating on slim margins and in order to generate more revenue, it has announced the addition of ads within its custom Android skin ColorOS.
In an official community post, Realme has revealed plans for introducing content recommendations (just another term for ads) in ColorOS. It says that the decision has been taken to "maintain a healthy and sustainable business model". These ads will be visible on all Realme smartphones running ColorOS 6 or higher via the Phone Manager app and the Security Check page. The ads will comprise of app promotions and commercial links.
The announcement means Realme has joined one of its closest rivals Xiaomi on the path of showing ads in the UI for earning more revenue. The latter has been showing ads in MIUI since 2018, a move that Realme ridiculed in the beginning but has taken a U-turn on. Xiaomi had to face a lot backlash for the decision and it eventually agreed to optimize the user experience by allowing users to disable these ads. And thankfully, Realme is doing the same from the start.
Steps to disable ads on Realme ColorOS devices:
- Visit Settings -> Additional Settings on your Realme phone
- Tap on Get Recommendations
- Turn off the toggle that says "Receive app and content recommendations in system apps"
Even though Realme's announcement post mentions Phone Manager and Security Check as the only places where ads will be visible, the ads disabling image mentions Download Management as well. Either way, the aforementioned steps should disable all Realme ads and any form of content recommendations regardless of where they appear in ColorOS.
