Telegram has kicked off the New Year 2020 by releasing a massive update for Android and iOS users worldwide. The update bumps the Telegram version number to 5.13 and brings tons of new features and major changes. The team has further packed the new version with numerous bug fixes and under the hood improvements. In other words, it is a must-install update for anyone who uses the app on his device.

With the Telegram v5.13 update, the team has introduced Theme Editor 2.0 that offers more freedom to those who prefer to customize the appearance of the app. It comes with a dedicated color picker making it easier to choose any shade of your favorite colors. It can be used for tweaking colors for tabs like My Messages, Background, and Main Color.

The new editor can be accessed via Chat Settings on Android and Appearance Settings on iOS. One can also share their creations with friends. There are also new patterns from Telegram that users can choose as chat backgrounds. Lastly in customizations, Telegram update brings new theme presets who don't want to go for manual customizations. These are accessible by visiting Chat Settings -> Color Theme.

Telegram updates a new feature called Send When Online which is essentially a message scheduling feature. It lets you set the date and time at which your message should get delivered. Interestingly, these messages will deliver only when the recipient comes online and if that recipient has allowed you to see his/her Online status.

Another change included in the update is improvements to location sharing. Telegram now lets you share a location by simply tapping on it in the map view. It eliminates the need for scrolling through a list of locations and look for the one you want to share. The search functionality has been made better as it now supports the list view for faster browsing through all search results. The list view can be accessed by tapping the bottom bar.

For those who love podcasts and audiobooks, Telegram will now remember your last position so that you can resume directly instead of doing so manually. This feature will work with any audio file that is longer than 20 minutes. It has further added the 2x option if you would like to listen to an audio file faster.

Here are other key Telegram v5.13 changes in the new update:

  • A quick Night Mode icon in the left sidebar for faster enabling/disabling of the Night Mode on Android
  • Night Mode supports maps as well on Android
  • There are new animations that you will notice as you will use and navigate through the Android app
  • You can now select a portion of the text instead of the whole text while copying on Android
  • Telegram now supports selecting multiple contacts and adding a comment when sharing content from any other app on Android
  • All archived messages can be marked as read with just one tap on Android
  • It has made it easier to choose video quality before sharing videos on Android
  • Sending contacts UI has been tweaked so that it does not take up the whole screen unless you expand it manually on Android
  • Telegram supports font size adjustment throughout the app on iOS
  • Telegram on iOS now supports third-party browsers and even allows choosing a default browser
  • Ability to choose what should and what should not appear on the iOS share sheet
  • Switching Telegram accounts becomes faster as it can now be done by tapping and holding on the app icon on iOS
  • Storage Usage UI has been tweaked on iOS so that users can understand the same in a better way.
  • Cache clearing on iOS has been made faster and convenient
  • Telegram groups will now show the list of members in a collapsed manner so that the "Leave Group" option is accessible without having to scroll through all of them.
