MediaTek has announced Helio G80 as the newest gaming chipset for budget smartphones. It is the third processor in the Helio G-series aimed at providing smooth and powerful gaming experience. It joins Helio G90/G90T (unveiled last year) and Helio G70/G70T (unveiled last month) and sits between those two.
The MediaTek Helio G80 is an octa-core processor featuring two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. It has been manufactured using 12nm TSMC FinFET technology. There is an ARM Mali-G52 MC2 graphics processor unit but no dedicated APU for AI prowess.
It is compatible with up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM (dual) or a single LPDDR3 RAM (up to 4GB) and eMMC 5.1 storage. The chipset is capable of offering a 25-megapixel sensor at 30fps, dual 16-megapixel sensors at 30fps, and a 48-megapixel 4-cell sensor at 17fps. In terms of display, it can be used with up to Full HD+ display panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. Other noteworthy features include Bluetooth 5.0, 802.11ac, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, and Galileo navigation technologies.
There are currently no words on when we can expect to see Helio G80 in smartphones. MediaTek has not announced any smartphone brand partners either. It seems like we will have to wait for some time and until there is an announcement from MediaTek or an OEM.
