Google Play crosses 65 billion downloads

Google I/O conference is on, and the company has revealed at the event that Google Play Store has seen over 65 billion downloads in 2015, which is a 30pc increase from 2014 when Google crossed 50 billion downloads. Google also revealed that Android OS has hit 1.4 billion users globally.

Google also revealed that over 600 Android smartphone models were launched in the last year alone. Apart from this Google's VP of Engineering Dave Burke revealed some more impressive numbers including “millions” of Android TVs, Android wear now has 12 partners making smartwatches including luxury brands like Tag Heuer which launched the $1500 Tag Heuer Connected model and a 100 units of Android Auto-powered stereos. He added that over a hundred more will be coming on board by the end of the year.

VP of Engineering Dave Burke stated, “There were 65 billion installs in the last year alone. And I’m just in constantly in awe of all the amazing apps and services that’s fueling this.

Rival Apple has announced 100 billion app downloads at the WWDC keynote in June 2015. Market research firm IDC had reported that Android will have 85% of the market share by 2020, while iOS will see a flat growth in the next few years.
