Android N Developer Preivew 3 features auto-updates like Chrome OS

19 May 2016 0

At the ongoing Google I/O 2016 event, Google took the stage to announce a lot of new features, products, services, and its vision for the future. Among all these, it also announced the third Android N Developer Preview which has also been referred as the "first beta" quality build of Android N since its first release earlier this year. It means according to Google, Android N is now stable enough that it could be used on your primary device. But do remember that even though it's a Beta build, you can still encounter some unexpected crashes, bugs, and other such performance issues.

Other than being the first beta build, the major change in Android N is the way it will handle software updates from now on. Google has now introduced auto-updates with this build which will work similar to Chrome OS. It means you will not get any notification to install the update and it will get downloaded automatically. There will also be no pop-up asking you to install the update, instead it will get installed automatically when you will reboot the device next time.

In simple words, Android will now download the latest available software update automatically and the older version will be switched with the newer version when you will reboot your device. This is the same way Chrome OS handles software updates on Chromebooks. It will not only provide a seamless software update experience but should also be faster as there will no "Android is upgrading" screen from now onwards.

As for the installation of Android N's latest Developer Preview version, the process is same as it was for the previous preview builds. You need to have a compatible Android device and then you can visit Android Developer Beta page for downloading the corresponding image file.
