Motorola will be releasing quarterly security patches instead of monthly updates

27 July 2016 6

Since Motorola is owned by Lenovo, everyone was excited to know that whether Motorola will continue releasing updates at frequent pace or not. However, today company officials clarified that the security update for the Moto G4 , Moto Z and Z Force will not be released on monthly basis.

From past few weeks, when Motorola unveils Moto Z we heard that the newly announced device won’t be getting monthly security updates and finally today company made this info official. When Moto fans called company’s policy as insecure, Motorola released a statement by committing that Moto Z and Z Force will be getting security patches at regular interval of time.

The first update which both aforementioned devices will be getting will include additional security patch as well. Now company said that they although committed security updates but didn’t confirm updates on the monthly basis. Let’s have a look at company’s official statement.

Motorola understands that keeping phones up to date with Android security patches is important to our customers. We strive to push security patches as quickly as possible. However, because of the amount of testing and approvals that are necessary to deploy them, it's difficult to do this on a monthly basis for all our devices. It is often most efficient for us to bundle security updates in a scheduled Maintenance Release (MR) or OS upgrade.

As we previously stated, Moto Z-Droid Edition will receive Android Security Bulletins. Moto G4 will also receive them.

So once again company officially accepts security updates for the Moto Z lineup and Moto G4 but didn’t commit about the monthly update. What will be the future of updates, let’s have a look at 2015 Moto X which is receiving Android security updates about once in a quarter, we can expect the same fate for the two aforementioned lineups.

The Moto X was on February security update for last few months until Motorola releases May security update for this device recently. On the other hand, the latest Moto Z lineup devices are also running on the May Android security patch, this means the newest in line is missing new security update for last 2 months.

If it's the question of taking sides, I will side with the users and Moto fans They are right in terming this development as making them feel insecure.
