Huawei, which is currently the third largest smartphone manufacturers in the world, is the top manufacturer in China. Now, the company plans to expand their reach in India, which is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world right now. Just yesterday, the company unveiled their Huawei P9 smartphone in India, alongside the stainless steel variant of the Huawei Watch.
A new report suggests that Huawei is about to start manufacturing of its devices in India, as more details will be announced in a month. Many other smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi have already started manufacturing devices in India as a part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. President of the Huawei India Consumer Business Group – Peter Zhai said, “Now we already have the license for manufacturing in place. In short term we will announce our local manufacturing plan, in one month.”
Huawei is definitely trying to target India as their second largest market for mobile devices, right after China. Zhai also added, “As an international brand, we are interested in developing our India business at the right time. It is going to be the second largest mobile device market after China. WE will be aggressive in India. Huawei will increase presence across 50,000 stores by the end of this year from about couple thousands now.”
Huawei has been selling smartphones in India over the last year 16 years and had established a Research & Development center in Bangalore in the year 1999. The company sells it devices under two brand names – Huawei and Honor. The Huawei P9, which was launched yesterday was a Huawei device launched in India after a gap of almost 3 years.
“India is a very special market. We would like to be more localized in terms of branding. We have a team of 3,000 people in R&D which would like to leverage for local understanding of consumer needs,” Zhai said.
Huawei is also planning to open branded stores across the country, but they still don’t have anything planned out, so might take a while.
