Apple A10 and Snapdragon 821 dominate AnTuTu's list of top smartphone chipsets

03 November 2016 0

AnTuTu is undoubtedly one of the world's most widely used synthetic benchmarking tool for smartphones. It is frequently used by critics, experts, and casual users alike to get an idea of a smartphone's performance and power. And now, it has released lists of top 10 performing smartphone chipsets for September 2016. There are basically four lists about top chipsets, top GPUs, top single-core CPUs, and top overall CPUs. And to no one's surprise, the lists are dominated by the latest Apple A10 and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 processors.

Let's have a look at each of the lists one by one.

Top 10 smartphone chipsets:

The list of top 10 smartphone chipsets is led by Apple's A10 with an average score of 170, 124 followed by Snapdragon 821 at 160,856. Both the latest chipsets from respective brands feature quad-cores but have been manufactured using 16nm and 14nm process respectively. And even though Snapdragon 821 is a slightly improved version of Snapdragon 820, it managed to score 30,000 more as the latter has an average score of 138,026. As for the third biggest brand Samsung, its Exynos 8890 scored 129,865 and a rank 4.

Top 10 Smartphone GPUs:

Nowadays, smartphone games are getting more and more realistic with better 3D graphics and other improvements in the industry. To make sure that those games run as they are intended to, a smartphone needs to have a great GPU for handling all those graphic intensive needs. And as per AnTuTu, it is the Snapdragon 821's Adreno 530 GPU which does the best job with an average score of 60277. It is followed closely by Snapdragon 820's Adreno 530 GPU with a score of 55098. Even though both processors use the same GPU, the SD 821 has it clocked at a higher speed which results in better performance. As for Apple A10's undisclosed GPU, it managed to hold the third spot with a score of 48564.

Top 10 Smartphone CPUs with Single-Core Performance:

Even though modern smartphone CPUs come with multiple cores with as high as deca-core on MediaTek's Helio X20, the single-core performance still holds the same significance. The competition in this category is quite close with a difference of only thousands of points and is led by Apple's A10 and A9 with scores of 20300 and 15746 respectively. The next two spots are held by Snapdragon 821 and 820 with scores of 13523 and 12182. Samsung's Exynos 8890 secured the fifth spot with a score of 12079 to complete the top five.

Top 10 Smartphones Overall CPU Performance:

This is the last list released by AnTuTu which talks about top smartphones with overall CPU performance. Here the top two spots are again held by Apple's A10 and A9 processors with scores of 52829 and 41626 respectively. But for the first time, Samsung's Exynos 8890 managed to beat Snapdragon 821 and ranks third with a score of 39685 as compared to 35954 of the fourth ranked. This is also the first time that Huawei's processor ended up in top five with a score of 35704, thanks to Kirin 955.
