There are 1 billion smartphone owners around the globe, to be precise the figure is 1.4 billion. Nearly 1.8 million smartphones are sold on daily basis. Last year was pretty amazing for smartphone lovers as we have seen tons of new smartphones but the best thing is smartphone manufacturer tried to not only follow the traditional design pattern but also the innovative design. We ended last year with spectacular Xiaomi Mi Mix, Honor Magic and much more.

From the look of things, it seems like we can expect this trend will continue in this year as well. We are already approaching the end of first quarter of the year and almost every smartphone manufacturer unveiled their products for the first half of the year. Last year innovative smartphones success set the path for other manufacturers during 2017.

Xiaomi Mi Mix:

The Chinese innovative smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi unveils a concept smartphone back in October. This device was even though a concept smartphone but still company announces they have the capacity of producing 10,000 units of Mi Mix concept smartphone. The announcement of the true bezel-less smartphone not only stun the customers but also the gadget experts as well. At the announcement event, everyone was expecting Mi Note 2 flagship smartphone but when Xiaomi unveils Mi Mix, everyone admits this device is the best innovative smartphone of 2016.

Unlike other Xiaomi smartphone, Mi Mix is a bit expensive that’s why the company officials emphasize on the manufacturing cost of this device. Xiaomi uses a ceramic material for designing this handset. To design this fabulous smartphone, the company join hands with Philippe Starck, a well-known French designer.

As far as the front facing camera is a concern, the company didn’t place it on regular position but instead the front camera of Mi Mix is at bottom bezel. So to capture selfies, the users will have to rotate their smartphone. The Mi Mix is featuring virtual keys. In terms of hardware specs, the Mi Mix is featuring a true gigantic 6.4-inch display full HD edgeless display. The device screen-to-body ratio advertised is 91% but as per our tests, it is around 84%.

The Qualcomm’s latest top of the line Snapdragon 821 Soc is powering the handset at a clocking speed of 2.3GHz with 4GB RAM. The built-in internal memory is 128GB. A 4,400mAh battery cell will keep this gigantic display lights on. On the rear side, the camera snapper is 16MP. As the camera sensor is on the front bezel, it is nearly 50% smaller than traditional camera module. As OS, the device has MIUI 8 but the company promises it will soon be updated with MIUI 9. Though the device has flagship hardware specs but the company releases a Pro version of it with 6GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The base variant cost price is USD 516 whereas the Pro variant costs 590 USD.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro:

Lenovo brings one of the most innovative smartphones this year as Phab 2 Pro. This device is first of its kind in the market which has enabled Project Tango. The device initial announcement was made at Google yearly I/O event back in June this year. If you unaware Google Tango Project, let me remind it for you.

With the new Project Tango, Google brings the augmented reality experience and Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is the first smartphone announced under this project. The Tango-enabled Phab 2 Pro has three key features. These features are depth perception, motion detection, and analysis of surroundings. On the rear side, the device has four sensors alongside the camera module.

The rear detection feature act as an eye for the device, once this feature is enabled it changes the normal view to AR environment. Thanks to depth perception feature, the device can automatically detect all obstacles in its way while analysis of surroundings.

As far as hardware specs is a concern, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is packed with a 6.4-inch display with quad HD screen resolution. The Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 652 is specially optimized for this handset. Under the hood, the SD 652 is accompanied with 4GB RAM and internal memory is 64GB. The internal storage can be expanded up to 256GB using external MicroSD card.

On the rear side, it has 16MP module with Phase detection auto focus feature. Up front, the camera sensor is of 8MP with a wide angle aperture of f/2.2. As it changes the environment into AR that’s why it brings the best Tango experience. As OS, the device is pre-installed with Android Marshmallow. A 4,050mAh battery cell keeps the Tango-enabled device lights on. To further promote Project Tango Google announced 35 apps are currently available for Tango smartphone on Play Store.

Huawei Honor Magic:

Another Chinese smartphone manufacturer was behind one of the most innovative smartphones of this year. Huawei recently unveils the much hyped four-sided curved display smartphone as Honor Magic. As the name suggests, indeed the device brings a number of magical things on board.

The Honor Magic is the first Huawei smartphone to have its own AI assistant which is optimized in such a way that it takes consideration what user is doing and what would be users’ next move. This surely will be surprising for many Huawei fans. This deep think feature will gather user’s info by noticing content on the device display and to access it all you need to just press the home button a bit longer than usual going into the home screen.

Unlike most of Huawei devices, the Honor Magic fingerprint scanner is embedded into home button which is very convenient as compared to the scanner on the rear side. The FaceCode is another additional security feature from Huawei. As it is featuring infrared scanner which unlocks device within seconds by identifying users face. Once the infrared scans users’ face it will automatically show a notification message and will unlock the handset.

According to the company, the device 70% battery cell will be charged in 20 minutes. The latest Honor’s EMUI OS is optimized with machine learning feature. The 5-inch display is packed with quad HD screen resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The slightly older Kirin 950 Soc is powering the handset at a clocking speed of 2.3GHz with 4GB RAM and built-in storage is 64GB. Like most of Huawei flagships, the Honor Magic is comprised of 12MP dual sensors whereas the front-facing selfie-centric camera is of 8MP only. As OS, though the device is still on Marshmallow but it has the special Magic live software. The device will be initially released in China at $520 but it is still unknown whether this device will be globally released or not.

Asus ZenFone AR
Asus wraps off the cover from ZenFone AR at CES 2017 and without any doubt, the company stole the spotlight of the event with their truly innovative Asus ZenFone AR. As we all know Google is one of the leading tech company promoting Augmented and Virtual reality. Google is providing two different platforms for both these realities. Up till now, we have seen smartphones either with Augmented reality or with Virtual reality but the ZenFone AR becomes the first smartphone announced with both AR and VR capabilities.

Not just that, the device is also first of its kind to have whopping 8GB of RAM. Google's AR platform smartphones are supported with Project Tango whereas, for the VR experience, the device needs to have DayDream support. Asus ZenFone AR supports Project Tango as well as Daydream platform.

The device is adorned with three camera sensors on the rear side. The first sensor is primary camera lens of 23MP whereas the second lens is for motion-tracking, last but not the least we have the depth-sensing sensor. All three sensors give premium experience of AR and VR reality.

The ZenFone AR is packed with 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with Quad HD screen resolution of 1560 x 1440 pixels. The Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 is specially optimized as SoC with vapor cooling pipes. The quad-core SoC is accompanied with 8GB RAM. In terms of storage, there are three variants with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB and memory can be further expanded up to 2TB.

The front facing camera module is of 8MP. A 3,300mAh battery cell is on board to keep its light on and it can be charged pretty fast using fast charging tech. The devices come pre-loaded with Android Nougat 7.0 with ZenUI 3.0 layer. The device is yet to be released and according to Asus, the device will be released in Q2 2017.

The new Xperia XZ is recently announced at MWC 2017. The device is good in terms of design and hardware that it achieved the award of best smartphone of the MWC 2017. The XZ Premium is featuring a glass loop rear body which is so glossy that on first look the device looks more like the mirror than the smartphone. Sony brought metal with glass loop design which is a refreshing change from traditional Sony smartphones.

Another best part of Xperia XZ Premium is its 4K HDR display which makes it one of its kind premium smartphone available in the market. The XZ Premium is packed with Super AMOLED 5.5-inch 4K display with whopping screen resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The device pixels density is 807ppi.

Sony becomes first smartphone manufacturer in the market to announce their flagship Xperia XZ Premium with the latest Octa-core Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 SoC running at 2.4GHz with 4GB RAM. The device internal storage is 64GB and it can be expanded using external MicroSD card. A 3,230mAh battery cell will power up the 4K display and it supports Qualcomm's fast charging tech.

Competing with Sony's camera sensor is never an easy task. The XZ Premium is packed with 19MP motion Eye camera. It is the only smartphone announced with Motion Eye sensor. According to Sony, this camera sensor can process image data at a very rapid speed which is 5X than usual sensors. Up front, the XZ Premium sensor is 13MP which is pretty awesome in capturing selfies and video chats.

  • And how can we forget the modular smartphone brought out by LG - the LG G5? Not even other biggies like Samsung or Apple brought out such a phone. Apart from being modular, the specs are also very lucrative and go well with the brand it carries.

      • As far as innovation goes, I will put my weight behind the Honor Magic. And everyone of us will agree that it comes with a four-sided curved display. And this is the only phone this year with such a feature. No wonder, it's included in the list.

          • And don't forget that it also carries it very own AI assistant as well. I like the thing that it guesses what the next move from the user could be. And this is what the Deep Think is.

            • I guess the first one in the list is best choice to be at the number one position. The bezel-less design has indeed been something innovative to talk of.
