The Nokia 7.1 is one of the best upper mid-range phone available in the market. It doesn't bring something extraordinary but still, it has all goodies in an affordable package below $400. It features solid hardware specs, stylish design, budget-friendly pricing and latest stock version of Android Pie. In terms of looks, the Nokia 7.1 feels like a premium phone with a beautiful display and long-lasting battery.
The Nokia 7.1 lags behind due to average cameras but it is understandable considering it doesn't belong to upper-class. Nokia 7.1 sports a 5.84-inches AMOLED display with Full HD+ screen resolution and HDR10 support. Under the hood, the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 636 is enough to cater your daily driver demands. The chipset is accompanied with 4GB RAM and built-in expandable native storage 64GB.
A 3,060mAH battery is on board to keep the device lights for one day on a single charge. Other features include a rear fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm headphone jack. The dual 12MP+5MP are good to capture in stable light conditions, however, the result suffers in low-light conditions. The best thing is Nokia 7.1 is not quite older and it will receive new stock version updates for the next couple of years.

In our view, the second position is attained by Motorola Moto Z3 Play. The Moto Z3 Play was announced back in June this year as the latest mid-range offering from Motorola. The device was initially available at $499, however, it faces stiff competition from flagship killer OnePlus 6 which was available at $529 with much better hardware. Now the device is available below $400 which makes it a worthy buy.
It is bringing a lot of goodies in this price range which isn't available for other phones in the market. For instance, it supports Moto Mods which allows you to enhance its capabilities. You can attach battery pack, projector, Speakers, photo printer and many other goodies to make the Z3 Play a great phone. The Z3 Play is shipped with free Battery Mod straight out of the box which enhances the battery life up to 16 Hours.
Unfortunately, it lacks the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, however, it has a Type-C adapter within the box. Following the latest trend, it has glass and metal sandwich design. It is currently running on the Android Oreo 8.1 with Motorola's custom UI skin over it. So if you are looking for something different from traditional phones the Moto Z3 Play brings a lot thanks to its Moto Mods support.

The Chinese giant Xiaomi is so far quite successful in the mid-range segment but the company isn't as successful in the flagship market as their mid-rangers. To compete well against the OnePlus the company debut a new brand Pocophone. So far the company announced only one budget-friendly flagship under this branding F1. The device is undoubtedly one of the best phones in this price range. It even beat OnePlus in value for money game.
It is the only flagship phone under $400 running on the Qualcomm's latest Octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset. The device is available in up to 6GB RAM variants with 128GB native storage. A fairly large 4,000mAh battery cell is on board to keep its lights on for more than one day on single charge. Despite being a budget-friendly flagship device it has dual cameras on the rear side.
As expected you have to compromise on few aspects as it comes with LCD display panel instead of OLED. Another back draw is it comes with the plastic body so it won't look as premium as phones with glass or metal rear. Overall in this price tag, the Pocophone F1 is a great buy and certainly brings enough to justify its price tag.

LG's last year flagship G6 is currently available at the much lower price tag. Despite being a year older flagship it still has enough goodies to attract buyers. It was the first phone in the market with a 2:1 display panel. Also, it was the first phone with a dedicated Google Assistant. It was one of the best flagship devices of last year with water and dust proofing capabilities, 3.5mm headphone jack.
The G6 features an aluminum chassis with glass covering the rear side. It has dual AI tuned cameras, the primary sensor is 13MP with f/1.8 aperture whereas the secondary sensor is ultra-wide angle module with 125 degrees field-of-view. Last but not the least we have the Huawei P20 Lite. As the name suggest its the Lite variant of Huawei's flagship P20. In terms of looks the P20 Lite looks quite identical to its superior siblings, however, the device lags in few aspects considering its a budget-friendly option.
Like most of the latest phones, it has a notch design. The P20 Lite is featuring a 5.84-inches IPS LCD display with Full HD+ screen resolution. Under the hood, the Kirin 659 chipset is powering the phone with max clocking at 2.36Ghz. It was announced back in Q1 with the Android Oreo 8.0 straight out of the box. Being the Lite variant it doesn't have powerful cameras setup instead the company opted 16MP primary sensor with 2MP phase detection autofocus. The P20 lite Lights are kept on by a 3,000mAh battery.
It is one of the compact options amongst all so if you don't like gigantic display phones the P20 Lite is a pretty good option. It won't disappoint you with its looks and performance, however, its cameras setup isn't on par with other phones in this niche. If the aforementioned other phones under $400 don't suit you the P20 Lite could be your compact companion.

How can you even think of any other device when you can see the iPhone there? It answers all the questions.
I am happy to see the OnePlus in this list. I knew that it would be able to find a place in such a list because, I think the combination of SD820, 6GB RAM 5.5-inch full HD and 16MP camera make it the best and most powerful.
And don't underestimate ZTE as well. For the specs provided for the Axon 7, it's one of the best high-end flagships from the company available today. And guess, it's offering much more than just the $400 pricing.
How is the phone termed as "powerful"? I mean what's "powerful" as it is a subjective term. But anyway, I did like smartphones included in this list. I could have suggested a couple of others. But, I don't want to mention anything else here.
As soon as I saw the price that these devices are priced under $400, I was doubtful if any iPhone might be seen in this list. But I was surprised to see the iPhone SE. Does that indeed cost so less?
