Samsung Galaxy S8 vs LG G6: What rumors suggest about upcoming flagships

01 February 2017 5

Both South Korean giant smartphone manufacturers Samsung and LG are going to introduce their flagship smartphones in next few weeks. It is confirmed that LG will take the lead this year by unveiling flagship ahead of Samsung. Not just that LG also captured the date which usually traditionally affiliated to Samsung i.e. Feb 26th. Though last year LG took a bold step by unveiling their first flagship with the modular design but at the end, Samsung wins with their traditional appealing design.

I am sure, everyone is keen to know whether the story will remain similar for this year as well or not because in 2017 both the smartphone manufacturers are revamping their flagships lineup and most probably adopting bezel-less design approach. It is yet to be seen which manufacturer will be able to attract large customers’ base with their bezel-less design. Today we will take a detailed look at key rumored difference between Galaxy S8 and LG G6. Not all info is officially confirmed but instead leaked by reliable sources. Let’s start with the release date.

Release date

As per officially confirmed info, LG is going to announce their next flagship at upcoming MWC 2017 event. LG is going to take lead by announcing their flagship in February whereas Samsung planned a separate dedicated event to launch their Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. We have to admit this year LG’s flagship will steal the spotlight of MWC 2017 event.

Samsung Galaxy S8 launch is expected on March 29th with a release on April 21st. On the other hand, LG is planning to release G6 flagship on March 10th which means they will have nearly six weeks’ time to grab market for their latest flagship.

Design

A recent leak confirms Samsung Galaxy S8 is featuring an all metal design with glass. The screen-to-body ratio will be pretty high and the bezels are also pretty slim. The good thing is physical home button is part of the history now. At the moment we can’t confirm whether Samsung Galaxy S8 metal and glass sandwich design will be fragile or not but one thing is confirmed the design looks quite premium in leaks.

On the other hand, LG is also revamping their design by ditching the modular design of last year flagship. LG’s flagship is featuring a glass on the rear side with metal which is quite luring and reflective. Both the flagships will be offering the high level of waterproofing. LG’s teaser indicated despite having smaller size body the device screen display will be larger.

Both the flagships will have all display front facing sides and despite Apple’s move of removing 3.55mm headphone jack, Samsung and LG will continue offering traditional headphone jacks. Samsung tested iris scanner with Galaxy Note 7, so there are fair chances Galaxy S8 will also have iris scanner whereas LG mentioned ‘captured it all at once’ which also indicates a single sensor for both front facing camera and iris scanner. Surprisingly both the smartphones are now expected with the rear fingerprint sensor which is not something new for LG but it will be the new experience for Samsung.

Display

As far as display size is a concern, we have three different kinds of rumors regarding the display size. The first kind of rumors indicates a 5.5-inch display whereas the other two suggests 5.7-inch and 5.8-inch respectively. The chances are quite high with the 5.8-inch display as the S8 Plus variant is expected to have the 6.2-inch display. So far exact display size of GS8 is still in dark.

Same is the case with the screen resolution, there are rumors of 4k display like Xperia Z5 premium as well as quad HD display but better than last year Galaxy S7-lineup. Samsung Galaxy S8 both variants will have dual edges Super AMOLED display.

The LG G6 is confirmed with 5.7-inch LCD display with quad HD screen resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels. The increase in pixel also increases the pixel density up to 564ppi. LG is expected to be the first company in the market having the flagship with the aspect ratio of 18:9. In case if Samsung adopts 5.8-inch display then it won’t be sharper than LG G6 as its pixel density will remain at 506ppi.

Camera

We have to admit that camera is one department where Samsung flagships never lack, same is the case with upcoming flagship lineup. There are three kinds of rumors regarding Galaxy S8 camera setup on the rear side. The first kind of rumor suggests a dual rear camera snapper with 12MP and the 13MP sensor, second kind of rumors indicate a 30MP snapper with OIS, last but not the least we do have reports that Samsung will stick to the same 12MP sensor with a wide angle aperture of f/1.7. The front-facing snapper is an 8MP module alongside iris scanner.

Rumors mill is not much active regarding the LG G6 rear camera sensors. However, it seems like LG will continue with a dual rear camera setup on the rear side because last year LG G5 selling point was its rear camera after modular design. There are rumors of an iris scanner on board but as I mentioned above we are unaware regarding accurate megapixels of LG G6 camera sensors.

Hardware

It is confirmed Samsung is going to be the first smartphone in the market with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 Soc inside for the Chinese and US variants whereas rest of the world will receive Exynos 8895. The Galaxy S8 is expected with either 6GB RAM or 8GB RAM. In terms of storage, the base variant will have 64GB storage whereas the top of the line variant has 128GB storage. Both variants internal storage can be expanded using external MicroSD card.

The LG’s flagship G6 will be featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor. The device is expected to have at least 4GB RAM accompanied with 32GB storage and MicroSD for expansion of memory. For connectivity, the USB Type-C will be on board for connectivity.

Software

From the look of things, one thing is almost confirmed that Personal Assistant seems to be one of the next big things in upcoming flagships. Samsung back in 2016 acquired VivLabs and later on company patents Bixby as AI-powered personal Assistant which will be replacing Samsung S Voice. LG is also not going to lack behind in the race of personal Assistant that’s why we have rumors LG G6 will be pre-installed with Google Assistant.

As OS, both devices will be pre-installed with Android Nougat and the best thing is both companies might bring devices with Android Nougat 7.1 version instead of 7.0.

Price

Last year, Samsung Galaxy S7 was launched around $800, we are expecting the hike in price for this year flagship. On the other hand, LG’s flagship G5 was a bit cheap and cost around $650. In case if LG managed to keep price tag low as opposed to Galaxy S8, for sure it will be an added bonus for LG to capture new buyers. Before heading to the conclusion, let’s have a look at both the device's hardware specs in tabular form so that both companies fan can have an idea of what to expect from both flagships in terms of specs.

Conclusion:

Currently, both the devices are the hot topic in smartphone industry but still, both companies are successful in hiding hardware details of both devices. So we can’t confirm which device is most promising.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 are offering premium hardware specs as per rumored info and premium offering is not only in specs but designing as well. Though display size of both devices will be increased but still the overall measurements of the body will remain similar. • As a matter of fact, there's very little to choose from these two phones. Display, RAM, storage, et al. are all more or less the same. It might depend on the brand as to who loves what and goes with it.

    • It's going to be a tough fight between these two flagships and the companies too. Samsung is coming out of the GN 7 disaster, while LG was disappointed to see the failure of the modular G5.

        • Apart from the tough competition, we will likely see some new features with advanced specs sheet. And yes, don't forget that we might see the bezel-less designs for both phones as well.

          • I had heard that Samsung is skipping the MWC event at least for launching the Galaxy S8. There's still no apparant reason for that in my knowledge, but it looks like LG will launch the G6 on Feb. 26.
