LG G6 vs G5: What we know so far

14 February 2017 6

In last couple of years, LG brought radical changes in desigining of thier flagships. Back in 2015, LG G4 was one of the best flagship smartphone of the year but the device didn't sold well despite having a top-notch camera and stylish looks. The device failed to impressed LG fans around the globe.

Last year LG played a gamble by completely revamping the design of G4 successor. The LG G5 brought number of features in a single year. It was company's first flagship smartphone with dual rear cameras and modular design. It looks like customers were not ready to embrace the change LG brought in with G5 that's why despite having number of Plus points, the device failed miserably in terms of sales.

Now all eyes are on the next flagship smartphone from LG. The device is rumored to be unveiled as G6 and the company already confimrmed its official unveiling with be on Feb 26th ahead of the MWC 2017. Without any doubt, the device will be star of the show and so far leaks confirmed it is indeed one of the hottest smartphone we have seen so far from LG. How LG's flagship G6 will be different from its predecessor is a matter of concern for all LG fans, Today to helpout our readers we have enisted all the details, so that everyone can know the expected difference between the two flagship smartphones.

This year LG has an advantage as the company will be announcing and releasing G6 flagship ahead of the Samsung. The device not only ditched the older modular design but also will be featuring larger display in the same compact body. The company could lure those customers who returned Galaxy Note 7 last year because of battery exploding issues.

Although only few info regarding the device is from official sources but LG already shared much info, it won't be difficult to compare two generations of LG's G lineup smartphones. LG G6 main highlight seems to be its larger display size with awesome aspect ratio and nearly bezel-less display.

Today's comparison of LG G6 with predecessor G5 is based on rumors, leaks, and speculations that are why we will recommend our readers to take few details with a pinch of salt as only a few things are from official sources. Let's start with the design.

Well, we have to admit that LG's decision of bringing modular design failed miserably. The device bottom slides out and LG G5 customers can use modular accessories to enhance the device capabilities including sound, camera, and battery. One of the reasons behind failure was LG failed to release a number of new modular "Friends" accessories. That's why for this year LG G6, the company once again went back and will be delivering a completely revamped flagship smartphone.

The LG G6 will be featuring a premium glass and metal design pretty much similar to Apple smartphones. The bezels on all four sides will be quite slim. The LG G6 will be LG's first flagship smartphone which will be IP68 certified which means the removable battery will become part of the history. Although LG G6 is expected to have larger battery cell with fast charging capabilities, so it won't be an issue at all.

The LG G5 measurements were 149.4 x 73.9 x 7.7mm and it weighs 159g only. However, the G6 measurements are still in dark but we can expect it will be similar measurements as LG has plans to have the larger display in the same compact body. Both the G5 and G6 will have USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack will be on board. The fingerprint scanner will be placed on the rear side, similar to LG G5.

As far as display is a concern, it seems like LG is still testing out different display sizes to fit in. The LG G4 was packed with 5.5-inch display whereas the last year G5 featured the 5.3-inch display. They tried to be in between Samsung's and Apple's flagships to attract customers. The G5 display had quad HD screen resolution and it was one of the best 2K displays available in the market. This year LG stepping up the game one step ahead.

The upcoming G6 will be featuring once again a new display size as opposed to its predecessor. The LG G6 will be featuring Quad HD 5.7-inch display and it is officially confirmed. The device aspect ratio will be 18:9, this means the device body size won't be enhanced despite the increase in display size. The G6 users can enjoy the large display and still can grab it easily because physical size will be similar to last year G5.

As per reports, the G6 screen-to-body ratio is above 90%, which means most of the front facing part is display. LG won't be the only smartphone manufacturer this year to have such display but instead, most of the smartphone manufacturers will be entering in this arena.

The G6 pixels density will be 564ppi whereas last year G5 quad HD display pixel density was 554ppi. The G5 display was protected by Gorilla Glass 4, we are expecting Gorilla Glass 5 protection for the upcoming G6.

One of the things which are still in dark regarding the upcoming G6 is its camera sensors. LG G5 dual rear cameras were presented as one of its selling features. Last year Samsung, LG, Google, and Apple devices camera sensors were the best. However, it is almost confirmed that G6 will be featuring dual-rear cameras like G5.

The G5 main rear snapper was of 16MP with an aperture size of f/1.8, OIS, HDR Mode, and Laser Autofocus whereas the secondary sensor is comprised of the 8MP module with f/2.0 aperture which works perfectly for wide-angle images. This sensor works great for capturing wider shots. Every smartphone company has their own strategy for the dual-rear cameras. Apple used second camera module for zoom in feature, whereas LG's second sensor was for wide angle images.

From what we heard so far suggest that LG G6 will also have 16MP and 8MP sensor on the rear side but these sensors will be much improved as compared to the predecessor. Up front, the dedicated selfie-centric camera sensor expected to be 8MP and this sensor will also have iris scanner as well.

Despite being a year elder flagship smartphone, LG G6 won't be bringing something extraordinary on the table. As being a year elder, everyone expects the G6 will be featuring the best hardware but from the look of things, it seems like that might not be the case. Recently a new report popped up suggesting Samsung already booked the entire stock of latest Snapdragon 835 until April, so we can't expect an SD 835 driven flagship in the market before Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.

That is one of the reasons HTC also delayed the launch of their flagship until availability of the latest SoC. So all those smartphones which are expected ahead of the S8 lineup will be packed with older SoCs of 2016. However, the slightly older SoC won't make or break for the LG's flagship as most of the customers don't even care about it. We do hope, it won't be a deciding aspect to grab the upcoming LG G6.

The G6 display size and resolution are improved, base variant internal storage is also doubled to 64GB. LG packed the V20 with a dedicated Dac sound chip, we are expecting similar for the G6 as well as it enhances sound and brings awesome sound experience. The IP68 certification will be deciding feature for many LG fans.

As per leaks, the G6 will be powered up by the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 SoC with 4GB/6GB RAM whereas the G5 was featuring Snapdragon 820 S0C with 4GB RAM. The G6 base variant internal storage will be 64GB with MicroSD support whereas the G5 packed with the 32GB expandable storage option. Another luring feature of G6 expected to be wireless charging capability with larger battery cell as compared to G5. The G5 battery cell was 2,800mAh whereas the G6 is rumored with 3,200/3,500mAh non-removable battery.

LG is amongst those smartphone manufacturers who are keen to bring latest Android OS versions to their flagships. The LG G5 was pre-installed with Android Marshmallow 6.0.1, currently, the device is on Nougat 7.0. whereas the latest G6 is expected with the latest Android 7.1.1 and the company's customized UX interface will be on top of it.

A recent leak suggests that LG G6 might also become first non-Google smartphone featuring Google's Assistant which is so far exclusive to the Pixel-lineup smartphones. The G6 is expected to have few customized features as both devices will be on Nougat. Before heading to the conclusion, it is important to know both the G5 and G6 hardware specs in tabular form below.

As expected, the LG G6 will be bringing changes in a number of key areas. These changes are more than traditional changes company brought after every year. In short, the LG G6 will be offering better display, premium metal build and slightly better hardware on board. Although modular design experiment was not a bad move from LG but unfortunately that didn't pay off well for the company as its sales were pretty less. The LG G6 has all needed improvements to make all wrongs, right for the LG and there are fair chances this device destiny will be different from last year G5.

The LG G6 is entirely a new device from LG and for sure it will be tougher as opposed to the G5 because of its solid metal chassis. The IP68 certification will make it the first smartphone of G-lineup with water and dust resistance capabilities. The G6 aspect ratio will make sure device can be used with the single hand despite having the large display. The camera sensors were the key selling feature of G6 predecessors, that is why hopes are pretty high for the next flagship as well.

We will be keeping a close eye on all the G6 info ahead of its Feb 26th announcement. Once the device will be official we will be comparing it with other top-tier competitors in the market. Till then, do share your views in the comments section below regarding changes LG is bringing with the G6 as compared to last year G5.
