LG G6 vs iPhone 7 Plus: A newbie battles with one of the finesses

13 March 2017 5

This year LG brought some major changes as far as their flagship smartphone is a concern. The first major prominent change is in design and second is announcing flagship a bit early with an early release. Both these changes are helping the tech giant to acquire Android market share. Last year LG brought modular design after the success of traditionally designed G4. However, the idea didn't attract customers that's why the company failed to attract both Android and iOS customers.

Fortunately, the latest G6 is way better than its predecessor and we have to admit LG came back strongly after the failure of last year G5. The LG G6 is one big slab with the large display, round edge luring and bold design and also have powerful hardware on board. The G6 was unveiled back on Feb 26th at MWC 2017 and so far early reviews regarding the device are quite healthy. In the last couple of weeks since the G6 announcement, we had put the latest G6 one on one against almost all top Android options available in the market.

Today we put the latest LG G6 against the Apple's latest top of the line offering iPhone 7 Plus. In today's comparison, we will compare how LG G6 compete against iPhone 7 Plus in a number of aspects ranging from hardware, software, design, display and a lot more things. Both the devices are currently the best offering from respective manufacturers, so it will be quite interesting to see how both flagships compete for each other despite having different operating systems. Let's start with the design as it is first prominent difference in both devices.

71.9 x 148.9 x 7.9 mm
5.7 inches - 2880x1440 px
77.9 x 158.2 x 7.3 mm

As I mentioned above, this year LG brings solid and completely revamped design on board. LG G6 display is covering more than 80% of the front side and the display is being covered with round corners which look quite beautiful. We have to admit it looks quite amazing. Like its predecessor, this year once again LG's flagship is adorned with dual camera setup on the rear side. The fingerprint scanner is below the dual camera module. The device design is a sandwich of metal and glass.

On the other hand, Apple's iPhones are always appreciated because of their design. The iPhone 7 Plus chassis is made up of metal and the dual rear camera setup is slightly bumpy. Despite this bump, iPhone 7 Plus is still thinner than G6. The LG G6 can be appreciated because of its large display in a compact body and also the rear camera doesn't have the bump. To make G6 more attractive LG reduces the top and bottom bezels to the minimum level and although it's a large display smartphone but still it can be held easily with the single hand.

Although glass and metal design is not the first choice for every because this kind of devices attracts fingerprints as well are fragile but still, we have to give LG credit for bringing a large display device with such compact body and narrow bezels. Apple's iPhone 7 Plus looks quite traditional without any attractive design change. In the design department, LG G6 is the winner.

One of the most important aspects of current gen smartphones is their display because the display is one area which provides the output of all hardware on board. Without any doubt, LG G6 display is mind blowing and it outruns its competitors. The G6 is packed with LCD type gigantic 5.7-inches display with quad HD screen resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels. Apple iPhone 7 Plus is also featuring LCD display of 5.5-inches, however, it lacks behind in screen resolution at 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The LG G6 display plus point is its aspect ratio of 18:9 whereas iPhone 7 Plus display highlighting feature is 3D Touch. Although next year iPhone 7 Plus expected with the OLED display but currently G6 beats iPhone 7 Plus not only in display size but also in screen resolution as well.

Like the design, Apple smartphones cameras were well appreciated because of providing best results even with the low Megapixel count. However, in the last couple of years, Android smartphone manufacturers improved their camera quality drastically. Both LG G6 and iPhone 7 Plus are featuring dual rear camera snappers. On the iPhone 7 Plus dual rear snappers are of 12MP. The primary snapper aperture size is f/1.8 whereas the second lightning sensor is f/2.8. The sensors other features are OIS and PDAF.

At least on paper, LG G6 rear camera snappers took lead. Both the sensors are of 13MP. The primary snapper aperture size is f/1.8 whereas the second lens is f/2.4. Apart from that, the sensors have laser autofocus and OIS. The LG G6 takes lead in capturing wide angle images, however in normal photos iPhone 7 Plus produces killer results thanks to its 2X Optical zoom. We also compared the camera sensor results of both cameras and we have to admit iPhone 7 Plus is the winner in this department. In not only beats G6 but also a number of Android smartphones available in the market.

Up front, the iPhone 7 Plus is adorned with the 7MP sensor which produces awesome results in video calling and selfies. LG G6 is being packed with 5MP wide angle camera which makes sure image quality doesn't effect even capturing wide-angle images up to 100 degrees.

For sure software is the key deciding difference between both smartphones. So both the devices will be the winner here considering its totally a matter of personal choice. Android owners have the slight edge over iOS in terms of customizability but there are million of customers who don't prefer customization. Apple iOS owners have the advantage of getting the fast update of latest iOS version whereas LG G6 owners will have to wait few months before getting the latest update.

LG G6 is pre-loaded with Google Assistant which is a welcome change for LG customers and on the other hand iOS owners are enjoying the Siri support. So it is not matter of options but instead, it depends on

Battery and charging tech
The LG G6 is packed with a 3,300mAh battery cell and as the device is yet to be released globally that's why we can't claim how many hours will it survive on normal usage. On the other hand, iPhone 7 Plus is packed with 2,900mAh battery. iPhones are always criticized for poor battery timings and the latest iPhone 7 Plus is not an exception. However, iPhone 7 Plus is still a better option as opposed to earlier iPhones.

LG G6 can be quickly charged thanks to Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 and for the US customers, it will be supporting wireless charging as well. LG G6 looks better than iPhone 7 Plus in this arena.

Durable and rigidness

Last year, Apple unveiled iPhone 7 Plus with IP67 certification which allows the owner to use their devices in water up to 1 meter for 30 mins without any damage. It can also stay strong against dust. This feature is surely a much-awaited feature for iPhone fans because we are seeing water and dust resistant Android smartphones for quite some time. Before iPhone 7 Plus, Apple lacks behind and also they improved build quality. The LG G6 is IP68 certified which means it can survive under 1.5 meter of water.

In terms of durability, the LG G6 glass design has Gorilla Glass 3 protection whereas the iPhone 7 Plus most parts are of metal. So in the case of sudden accidental drops iPhone 7 Plus can easily survive better whereas the G6 survives better in water drops. So it's a tie as both the devices are solid in one aspect.

Price and release
Well purchasing a flagship smartphone will always cost you a hefty amount and both the devices are no exception. The iPhone 7 Plus base variant cost $770 and currently available globally. On the other hand, LG G6 is currently available for South Korean market only at a price tag o 899,900 Won ($796). LG G6 US release is expected on April 7th whereas the Australian customers will be getting G6 on March 28th. There are fair chances LG will drop down the price for the US customers. So we can't confirm what will be G6 Price for the US customers but there are fair chances it will be low as opposed to the iPhone 7 Plus.

Comparing hardware specs of iPhone and Android-running smartphone is not the easy task because usually, Android smartphones use traditional SoCs but that's not the case with iPhone as they design their own SoCs which require less RAM but still perform extraordinarily.

The LG G6 is packed with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 SoC which is not the latest SoC but instead currently the second best SoC from Qualcomm. As opposed to that iPhone 7 Plus is featuring the A10 Fusion SoC which is without ay doubt one of the best SoC available for smartphones. In benchmark results, the iPhone 7 Plus performs way better than almost all chips available in the market. As per AnTuTu benchmark listing, the A10 Fusion scored 150,000 whereas the SD 821 managed to achieve 141,092 points. Other benchmarks also give similar results that are why we have to admit that A10 Fusion is way more powerful as opposed to SD 821.

On Paper, LG G6 is packed with 4GB RAM but the iPhone 7 Plus is packed with 3GB RAM. The difference in RAM doesn't matter at all because in real life iPhone 7 Plus performance is extraordinary. As far as internal memory is a concern, the LG G6 owners can either grab 32GB or 64GB variant but the iPhone 7 Plus owners have liberty to grab 32G, 128GB, and 256GB option. LG G6 owners can expand memory using external Micro-SD card. LG G6 fans will have to accept that iPhone 7 Plus beat G6 in hardware performance department. The iPhone 7 Plus hardware is fully integrated and optimized with the OS. For more hardware details, let's check out both the devices specs sheet in the tabular form below.
