Samsung unveils bezel-less Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus with Bixby AI Assistant

29 March 2017 0

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are finally official after those frequent trails of leaks and rumors which actually spilled almost everything. One of the last stints came from OnLeaks that not only released the high-resolution images but also the full specifications of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. But, it’s time to meet and greet them officially. The highlight of the two smartphones is, of course, the all-glass display which Samsung likes to call Infinity Display. This is indeed a radical change in the design of smartphones that Samsung had been offering for some years.

If you had been following the leaks attentively then you must know Samsung has adopted new aspect ratio for the display. As you can see, there are no side frames also upper and the lower edges are minimized. Samsung wants you to make your attention at the top-minimized bezel that is only there for the cameras, speakers, and sensors. And, the most radical change can be seen at the bottom where there’s no iconic physical Home button.

Samsung Galaxy S8’s Infinite Display is the Super AMOLED screen type with a more elongated aspect ratio than usual. Galaxy S8 holds 5.8-inch diagonal with 570 ppi, while on the S8 Plus, you’ll find the 6.2-inch diagonal with 529ppi. The Always On display makes sure that you quickly sneak preview the notifications without turning on the screen.

The longest diagonal of the devices doesn’t interfere with the dimensions and make them look greater. If compared with the Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S8 is narrower by 4.5mm and even shorter by 1, and maintains the same thickness of 0.3mm. The height is increased, but the narrower design makes the device fit in hand comfortably. Needless to say, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are water and dust resistant; have IP68 certification.

Both, Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus include the same camera modules on both the sides. The front of both of them holds an 8MP camera with autofocus, while the rear has a 12MP camera with Dual Pixel technology and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Similar to camera specs, both are powered by the same processor – Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 CPU for some regions. Both the SoCs are made with the 10nm manufacturing processor and have an octa-core architecture. The processors are coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal which can be expanded further using a microSD card.

This time, the fingerprint scanner is placed on the back of the device next to the camera. Just like the Note 7, which is of course, not with us now, Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus hold iris scanner on the front near the traditional camera.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus also come with the facial recognition technology, which will open the devices just by looking at the screens. This one specific feature didn’t attain much hearsay before, though it’s not surprising, a report came two weeks earlier by Bloomberg said facial recognition will help the customers to make the payment. This amazing technology didn’t get much attention may be due to the fact it didn’t get any rigidity from reliable sources.

Well, Samsung seems to have made a tight grip on security by adding facial recognition, in the pool of its other stuff - fingerprint sensor, Secure Folder, and Samsung Pass.

Now, Samsung has another new tech debuted in the two flagship smartphones. Bixby, Samsung’s virtual assistant.

Bixby is an intelligent voice assistant that will help you to use the device more conveniently. You just need to press the Bixby key or say “Bixby” to get a response from the same.

Samsung’s very new Bixby Assistant has three key features – Vision, Home, and Voice. The first feature that holds meaning in its name itself lets the users know about things nearby them or do real-time translations. Just point the camera at what interests you and Bixby will provide your information, tips, and more on the same. What else? Well, this feature even let you check the prices online, scan the QR code and more.

The second feature Bixby Home seems to be self-explanatory and you might have thought that it’ll let you control your connected home appliances, but according to Samsung, Bixby home is a hub where you can control all your personal information – appointments, news that is personalized based on the user tastes, weather, e-mail, music, and photo gallery.

The Bixby Voice similar to what Cortana does in Windows and Google Assistant in Android, and Siri Assistant in iOS. It’s able to understand complex instructions expressed in natural language. Initially, though, Bixby Voice will be available in English only.

To use these features, the Galaxy S8 must be connected to a Wi-Fi or mobile network. In order to use this feature, you must be signed in to your Samsung account.

Coming back to the technical specifications, Galaxy S8 has 3000mAH battery and Galaxy S8 Plus packs 3500mAH battery. They both support rapid charging and wireless charging. Samsung brings the Type-C USB to Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus which is a great thing.

What’s inside the retail package apart from the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are AKG headsets, one of the flagship brands of the Harman that Samsung has acquired a few months ago. We have already seen these headphones in clear images. They have a stylish design with a braided cable instead of a regular plastic one. These cables are actually an anti-tangle wire and the body of the earphones is made up of metal.
