Samsung Galaxy S8 vs OnePlus 3T: Would it challenge OnePlus 3T the flagship killer Status?

07 April 2017 0

Last week, the South Korean giant unveiled their flagships Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus on March 29th. Both the devices are well appreciated because of their futuristic luring metal and glass design. This year Samsung delayed new Galaxy S flagship announcement for a month because from last few years Samsung is taking stages during MWC events to unveil new Galaxy S flagships. This year Samsung's MWC slot was captured by LG and they unveiled G6 at the event.

The new Galaxy S8 flagship will be competing for head to head against LG G6, Huawei P10, Apple iPhone 7 and Pixel smartphone. We compared the latest flagship against all their initial competitors in the market but we skipped one of the most affordable high-end smartphones unveiled last year. Yes, you guessed it right we are mentioning none other than OnePlus 3T. We already had a hands-on review of OnePlus 3T

The OnePlus 3T was certainly one of the best flagship killer smartphone unveiled last year. The device was unveiled in the second half of the year and was a great competitor device against top Android flagships which were available almost double of its price tag. A few weeks ago when LG G6 was unveiled, we compared it against OP3T to checkout will it be able to keep its flagship killer status or not.

Now another flagship Android smartphone is out and this device is pretty important for Samsung as it is their next big device after Galaxy Note 7 Fiasco. Today we will check out how GS8 can compete against OP3T which is known for being a flagship killer. We are starting with Design and Build quality as it is pretty important aspect when you are considering to purchase a top tier smartphone

Build and Design

This year Samsung opted a glass and metal sandwich design but they relied heavily on glass for the design of their flagship GS8. The chassis of GS8 is made up of metal whereas the front and the rear side is glass. Samsung protected the front and rear glass with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 but still, it looks fragile.

On the front facing side, there is not a single physical button even the home button is removed. Samsung reduces the bezels from all front facing side to make more space for larger display while keeping the same compact body like the standard 5.2-inches smartphone. The fingerprint scanner is also moved to the rear side alongside the camera module.

OnePlus, on the other hand, followed the Apple's way of designing the premium devices. From the last couple of years, Apple ditched the glass and metal design but instead, now they are using Aluminum chassis. OnePlus opted all Aluminum body for OnePlus 3T. The display of OP3T is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

Another important thing is Galaxy S8 is IP68 certified which means it will work fine even after being submerged in 5 feet water for 30 minutes whereas the OnePlus 3T can't resist water and dust.

This year Samsung didn't rely on conventional display screen but instead, they used dual curved wrap-around the display for both GS8 and GS8 Plus. The Galaxy S8 display is packed with infinity Super AMOLED display of 5.8-inches with Quad HD screen resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels. The display aspect ratio is 18.5:9 and pixels density is 570ppi. The GS8 display screen-to-body is 83.6%.

The OnePlus 3T is featuring a 5.5-inches Full HD Optic AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 pixels display. Both the device's display are larger than standard flagships but instead are in phablet niche. It won't be easy to easy to operate both phones single-handedly. The OP3T screen-to-body ratio is 73.1 and its pixels density is 401 considering its a full HD device.

Samsung's Galaxy S8 quad HD infinite display will surely have added load on the battery whereas the OP3T Full HD display is sharp enough to watch content with impressive colors and deep blacks.

Despite the fact, OnePlus 3T is almost six months old smartphone but still, its hardware is powerful enough to compete against latest flagships available in the market. One of the key selling features of OnePlus 3T was its 6 gigs of RAM. It is indeed amongst few flagships which are pre-loaded with 6GB RAM. The Galaxy S8 comes in single configuration only 64GB but it can be expanded using external MicroSD card.

The Galaxy S8 is packed with Qualcomm's latest top of the line Snapdragon 835 SoC / Exynos 8890 SoC with 4GB of RAM. On the other hand, the OP3T is featuring Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 SoC with 6GB RAM. The device internal storage is 64/128GB and it is not expandable.

Both the devices won't bring any difference during processing, multi-tasking, and all other stuff because the device is never utilized to its fullest. The OP3T has added the advantage of 2 gigs of RAM whereas GS8 is bringing the latest and powerful SoC on board. Let's check out both devices key hardware specs in tabular form below.

The camera is one area where it is never easy to compete against Samsung's flagship, Same is the case with Galaxy S8. At the announcement, Samsung stated that Galaxy S8 is featuring the best camera module from Samsung ever. On the other hand, the OP3T camera is not bringing something extraordinary on board for customers.

The Galaxy S8 primary snapper is 12MP with F/1.7 aperture and camera pixel is 1.4µm. It has PDAF and OIS. The sensor is similar like last year Galaxy S7. It will perform equally good not only in daylight but also in low-light conditions. The OnePlus 3T rear primary snapper is 16MP with Optical Image stabilization. Its aperture size is F/2.0 and camera pixel is of 1.12µm.

The front facing camera snapper on Galaxy S8 is 8MP and it has autofocus. On the OnePlus 3T, front-facing selfie camera snapper is of 16MP with Optical Image stabilization.

One of the most important aspect while considering a flagship smartphone is its battery life. The Galaxy S8 is featuring a 3,000mAh battery cell which can be quickly charged thanks to the Quick charge 2.0 support. The US variant supports Wireless charging. It has the latest Type C 3.1 connectivity port. The OnePlus 3T is packed with slightly large 3,400mAh battery. It can be charged pretty quickly thanks to the Oppo's Dash Charging tech. It has USB Type-C 2.0 and it doesn't support Wireless charging.

Samsung didn't adopt the latest Quick Charge 4.0 which is quite surprising. The OP3T can be charged up to sixty percent in just 30 minutes whereas the Galaxy S8 fast charging won't be as efficient as OP3T. The GS8 does require more juice because of its large quad HD display, latest processor and number of features which do require more energy, On the other hand, OnePlus 3T owners will get the benefit of Full HD display here. For sure if you are looking for a better battery life, OnePlus 3T is the winner here.

Galaxy S8 Extra perks

Being the latest flagship, Galaxy S8 has a number of perks over the OnePlus 3T. Apart from being IP68 certified, it has own AI-powered Bixby Assistant which will remain Samsung's exclusive. The OP3T has the fingerprint scanner for added security but the latest Galaxy S8 is bringing IRIS and facial recognition feature. Added features are always a plus point. The new Galaxy S8 is bringing a number of new things on board like Dex support which allows you to have Android experience on the large desktop.

The Galaxy S8 base variant can be grabbed for $850 in Black, Blue, Grey, Silver and Gold colors from April 21st onwards. On the other hand, the OnePlus 3T base variant with 64GB memory is already up for sale at a price tag of $439 in Grey, Gold, and Black.

Both the devices are the best in their niche. The OnePlus 3T is bringing the best you can purchase after spending around $400 whereas this year Samsung increased Galaxy S8 price as opposed to last year GS7.

The Galaxy S8 Infinity display, top of the line SoC, hi-fi camera, trimmed bezels makes it one of the most luring smartphones from Samsung. The OnePlus 3T is featuring a solid metal chassis with top tier hardware at the much affordable price tag as opposed to Galaxy S8.
