Galaxy S8 vs Xperia XZ Premium : Tussle between two stupendous flagships

10 April 2017 0

The South Korean giant Samsung is in news from past few weeks because of their latest flagships Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Both the latest flagships are much changed from their predecessors. The devices have the glass cover on both front and rear side. This year Galaxy S lineup success is pretty important for Samsung as the lineup brings next top of the line smartphones after Galaxy Note 7 Fiasco.

No doubt, both the Galaxy S smartphones are the most anticipated flagship of the first quarter of this year. However this year ahead of Galaxy S8 lineup, a number of Android flagship smartphones were unveiled in February. The LG's G6 attained similar kind of attention what the company was hoping for after unveiling new flagship on Feb 26th. Apart from LG, Sony also took the stage to unveil their latest premium flagship Xperia XZ Premium at the MWC 2017.

Samsung's Galaxy S lineup is always regarded as the best Android lineup which brings tons of new features in an innovatively designed premium device with top of the line hardware, Same is the case with this year Galaxy S8 lineup. Like always, every new flagship has to face the wrath of already announced flagships, We already put the Galaxy S8 head to head against LG's G6, Apple's iPhone 7, OnePlus 3T and Google's Pixel but we haven't compared it with Xperia XZ Premium yet.

Today we will be comparing the Samsung's top of the line flagship against the Sony's latest best flagship. Both the devices will be head to head in the market, So for sure, Android flagship customers will consider both devices before making any purchase. Design & Build

As far as design and build quality are a concern, both the devices are bringing the refreshing change from traditional design. The Xperia XZ Premium is featuring attractive glass loop on the rear side which is quite a shiny and reflects everything around the user. We have to appreciate Sony for bringing a change from conventional aluminum slab designs.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S8 is featuring a glass and metal sandwich design which brings both metal sturdiness and glass premium looks. The bezels are trimmed down from all edges especial the top and bottom is reduced to the minimal. The Galaxy S8 is packed with dual curved wrap around edges display which is quite attractive like its predecessors.

The Galaxy S8 front facing fingerprint scanner is now shifted to the rear side alongside fingerprint scanners and also the physical buttons are part of the history. The Xperia XZ Premium fingerprint scanner is still in its conventional place i.e right edge side. The Galaxy S8 is 0.1mm thicker than XZ Premium and both are equally wider. In this scenario we have to give credit to Samsung for setting up a large display is the same compact body like traditional smartphones. The Galaxy S8 is the winner here because its design is more futuristic as opposed to XZ Premium but the build quality on both devices is awesome.

In the display department, the Galaxy S8 is no where near to the XZ Premium. In fact, it will be one of the key selling features of XZ Premium. Sony packed the XZ Premium with a 5.5-inches 4K display. The display screen resolution is 3840 x 2160 pixels, its pixels density is 807 ppi. As Opposed to that, the GS8 is featuring a 5.8-inches display with a screen resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels, its pixel density is 570ppi.

No doubt, Sony is bringing the best screen resolution which a flagship smartphone can currently offer but there is something which needs to be considered and that is displayed tech of both devices. No doubt, Sony display is quite amazing but it is still the IPS LCD which is not as good as OLED display.

Samsung smartphones always had an upper hand because of their Super AMOLED display and in last few years Samsung much improved their Super AMOLED display tech. Last year Galaxy S7 lineup Super AMOLED display was awarded as the best display available in the market by DisplayMate thanks to its deep blacks, awesome colors saturation, hi-res colors and the brightness level is also pretty amazing.

This year once again DisplayMate recommended GS8 display is the best available in the market. The Galaxy S8 supports HDR content, Xperia XZ Premium 4K display panel also supports HDR+ content and it also has Dolby vision support on board. Well, despite having high resolution, XZ Premium display might not be able to completely beat the Super AMOLED display of GS8 because the high resolution is not the only thing required to make display better. There are a number of factors which played an important role in making display experience better and GS8 seems better choice here.

Hardware specs

In terms of hardware specifications, both the devices are bringing similarities on board. The Galaxy S8 is internally powered up by the Octa-core Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 SoC clocking at 2.4GHz/ Exynos 8895 SoC. Traditionally SD 835 variant is exclusive for the Chinese and US customers only. The Octa-core SoC is accompanied with 4GB RAM but there is an exclusive variant for the Chinese customers with 6 gigs of RAM and 128GB internal storage. However, the standard variant comes with 64GB expandable memory.

The XZ Premium is the first smartphone announced with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The internal storage can be expanded up to 256GB using external MicroSD card. The overall hardware of both devices is similar, let's check out more details about the hardware specs in tabular form below.

Nowadays battery is also an important factor which played an important role in grabbing new flagship smartphones. Normally most of the flagship smartphones can only provide one day on single charge. A 3,000mAh battery cell will be keeping the Galaxy S8 lights on. It can be quickly charged thanks to Quick Charge 2.0 support and the US variant also supports Wireless charging.

The XZ Premium has a 3,230mAh battery cell which also can be quickly charged. However, the XZ Premium might require more juice to power up a 4K display panel whereas GS8 won't be able to provide much energy because of slightly small battery and large 5.8-inches display panel.

In cameras department, both are winners because Sony smartphones are known for their world class cameras and on the other hand Samsung's Galaxy S7 lineup camera sensor was awarded as the best camera of smartphone unveiled in 2016. The high appreciation of last year camera lens prompted the Samsung to didn't change the main camera snapper even after one year.

The Galaxy S8 is featuring the 12MP module with OIS and PDAF. It is the same sensor used in last year Galaxy S7. On the XZ Premium, the rear primary snapper is 19MP with OIS. Up front, the selfie-centric snapper of XZ Premium is 13MP while on the GS8 the snapper is 8MP. The front facing camera of GS8 has auto focus which is never introduced for front facing cameras. Both the devices camera sensors are equally good and won't disappoint users in daylight and low-light conditions. However, in low-light conditions, the GS8 has slightly edge over the XZ Premium.

The XZ Premium rear camera is one of its kind to have Motion Eye sensor. For this sensor, Sony merged their two tech Cyber-shot and Sony Alpha. Additionally, the snapper is memory stacked Exmor RS sensor.

It is not an easy call at all to recommend which one is better. The Xperia XZ Premium has the edge of the 4K display panel, awesome rear camera lens, a refreshing change in design and above all top of the line hardware makes it one of the best Android flagships unveiled this year in Q1 2017.

On the other Galaxy S8 design is though more luring but also it looks fragile despite it is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The hardware specs are not different between both the flagships. The autofocus feature of front facing camera makes it a standout feature. The Galaxy S8 has its own personal AI assistant Bixby and also it has facial and iris recognition feature for added security apart from fingerprint scanner.

Both the devices build quality is also equally good and both looks premium while holding in hands. Those who take a lot of selfies, we will recommend GS8 is a better choice, however, if you are rear camera user we will recommend XZ Premium as it has one of the best camera modules. Another important aspect will be the delay in the release of XZ Premium. If you are looking to grab XZ Premium, you might have to wait till the first half of the June whereas the GS8 will be available globally from last week of April.
