Honor 8 Pro vs Huawei Mate 9: An in-house competition

20 April 2017 4

The Honor 8 Pro is the latest best product from Huawei's Honor branding. The device is receiving well appreciation since its announcement for the European and Russian market. The device is bringing the top of the line hardware on board alongside dual cameras on the rear side. The device is pretty much capable of competing against the latest flagships and phablets available in the market while keeping the price tag low as opposed to others.

Like always, when a new smartphone is announced, it has to compete against the latest offering in the market. We already have seen Honor 8 Pro head to head against Samsung's Galaxy S8, LG's G6, Huawei's P10, and last year Honor 8 but the device yet to be compared to the latest phablet Mate 9 from Huawei.

Soon after the announcement, the Honor 8 Pro becomes one of the best options for the customers under £500. It is bringing a large quad HD display, latest Kirin 960 SoC, dual cameras and latest OS. I am sure all these aspects prompt anyone should they pay extra to purchase Mate 9 when an affordable device is bringing all these luxuries.

Both the devices are latest premium devices from Huawei and Honor branding. The devices not only share similar kind of dimensions but also the UI experience on both these devices is same. So paying extra bucks for the Mate 9 is worth it or not? let's check out which device is the better choice if you are considering to purchase anyone of the aforementioned devices. Without any further ado, let's start with the design.

78.9 x 156.9 x 7.9 mm
5.9 inches - 1920x1080 px

As far as design is a concern, both the devices fall into phablet niche, so both are quite gigantic in hands. The Honor 8 Pro is of 5.7-inches whereas the Mate 9 is of 5.9-inches. It won't be an easy task to hold them with the single hand but the company tried to solve this problem by bringing optimized EMUI which brings a number of gestures which helps the user to control device single-handedly. The desktop of the device can be shrunk down as well. The notification bar can be dragged down using fingerprint gesture.

The fingerprint scanner on both devices placed on the rear side. The Honor 8 Pro is featuring a brushed metal finish which gives the device more premium look as opposed to the glass and metal sandwich design of original Honor 8. The Mate 9 is also a solid slab of metal. The dual camera sensor on the Honor 8 Pro is placed vertically on top right side accompanied with the flashlight. On the other hand, the Mate 9 cameras are placed vertically on top and the flashlight is alongside it in the vertical position.

Unfortunately, both the Honor 8 Pro and Mate lacks water and dust resistant capabilities.

The Mate 9 features the largest display and also its screen resolution is weak as opposed to Honor 8 Pro. The Honor 8 Pro is featuring a quad HD display panel of 5.7-inches with the screen resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. As compared to that 5.9-inches display of Mate 9 screen resolution is 1080 x 1920 pixels. Despite having the low screen resolution, the Mate 9 display didn't struggle at all and provides sharp colors for video content. It won't be an easy task to differentiate the quality when both devices are placed side by side while watching the video.

However, when you are watching a VR content, Quad HD beats the quality of Full HD. The Honor 8 Pro fits perfectly in Google VR cardboard so that users can enjoy hi-res virtual reality content and games. Both devices have Eye Comfort Mode which makes sure device blue light can be reduced strain of light during the night.

Hardware specs

As far as hardware specs is a concern, Mate 9 and Honor 8 Pro are packed with the latest Kirin 960 SoC. The Mate 9 SoC is accompanied by 4GB of RAM whereas the Honor 8 Pro comes with 6GB of RAM. The overall performance of both the devices is pretty great and the user won't feel any lag behind in opening apps. A number of apps can be opened and transition between them will be smooth even if you watch hi-res video content as well as during playing hi-fi games. Let's check out more details about the hardware specs in tabular form below.

Huawei is amongst those smartphone manufacturers who were the first to start producing smartphones with the dual camera lens on the rear side. The Huawei Mate 9 is company's flagship device that's why it is packed with 20MP monochrome lens whereas the color lens is of 12MP. On the Honor 8 Pro, both the monochrome and RGB sensor are of 12MP. The autofocus on both the devices is laser-guided so that user can capture subject sharply.

To make sure, results are great at night as well, rear cameras of both devices adorned with dual LED flashlight. The camera aperture of both devices is F/2.2. Both lacks optical image stabilization but has digital stabilization feature. The good thing is both devices can capture 4K videos. On the front facing side, the sensors are of 8MP which are enough to capture good quality selfies and video chats.

Battery and OS

Being the latest smartphone, the Honor 8 Pro has the advantage as far as OS version is a concern. Both the devices are running on Android Nougat with EMUI layer over it. However the Honor 8 Pro is running on the latest EMUI 5.1 whereas the Mate 9 is on slightly older EMUI 5.0. The key differences between the two EMUI versions are pretty less. Both the devices come pre-loaded with a number of gestures, native multi-tasking feature and also the mode for single-handed usage.

Huawei is amongst that smartphone manufacturer who is known for bringing gigantic batteries in their smartphones, same is the case with these two handsets. Both are powered up by a 4,000mAh battery which gives 2 days battery life on average usage. We have appreciated two days battery life because currently most of the devices are not able to survive more than a single day.

Both Honor 8 Pro and Huawei Mate 9 are the latest offerings from the Chinese manufacturer. The Mate 9 is slightly large in size, better camera sensors but it lacks behind Honor 8 Pro in RAM and screen resolution. Both are offering a relatively large 4000mAH battery which is the sight of relief for those customers who are looking to grab smartphone with long battery life.

Both Mate 9 and Honor 8 Pro are widely available in most regions, however, Honor 8 Pro yet to be released for the US customers. As far as price is a concern, the Honor 8 Pro is slightly affordable despite being the latest one. The Honor 8 Pro cost $570 in Europe whereas the Mate 9 base variant cost around $670. At the end, we would like to hear ur keen readers thoughts regarding which smartphone would they like to purchase among the aforementioned devices.

      • It's a hard competition actually. So many things are similar - the dimensions, more or less the interface and is still affordable. Why not go for that instead?

          • The battle from Honor 8 Pro with the likes of Galaxy S8 as well as LG G6 is understandable. But, having a device getting compared with another device from the same company is hardly we see as a comparison like this. Well done!

              • The upside of the Honor 8 Pro is that it comes for less than £500 and is the best bet for that price slot. Guess, it comes pretty acceptable features like dual cameras and Kirin 960 at that price.
