Android O to bring Google Assistant and a new launcher for Android TV

18 May 2017 3

The tech giant Google is not paying much attention to its Android TV platform from last few months. However, the latest Android O developer preview opens up a new phase of improvements for the platform. Unfortunately, Android TV app is still not available on Youtube. Well, it seems like waiting for so long brings fruit.

With the new Android O, a new launcher is announced for the Android TV. Since the launch of this platform back in 2014, its UI launcher never gets a major update. The older launcher top row was comprised of suggestions menu from the installed apps, whereas the bottom row has the list of apps.

Thanks to the Android O, the new launcher apps appears as channels. Now, the horizontally placed top row is featuring the installed apps. Every row has content from the app and it showcases animated preview once you hover over it in a similar way to YouTube TV. Another good thing is new launcher brings a new TVProvider library which allows apps to show more and it can also create channels as well.

Last but not the least, Google Assistant also becomes part of this new launcher UI. The Assistant was initially expected to be rolled out for those running on Android TV 6.0 back in first quarter of this year, unfortunately, it didn't happen. With the new launcher, now Google Assistant will be on board as well.

One good is there that due to Google's ignorance to Android TV, it's been a great opportunity to give a major facelift this platform. And it'll indeed help.

The Android TV platform was kind of getting a bit ignored by Google. But it looks good that Google has brought in lots of things in Android O for Google Assistant and Android TV.
