As confirmed by reports earlier, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active variant does indeed exist. The phone has been in the works for some time, and has now finally been announced by Samsung as well as AT&T, since that is the carrier this phone will be exclusive to. According to a news brief by Samsung, the S8 Active is going to be available starting tomorrow!
Galaxy Active variants, which are always exclusive to AT&T, are more rugged versions of the current mainstream Galaxy flagship device. And as always, the S8 Active lives up to the reputation. Its rugged design and military-grade build makes it resistant to water, dust, scratch and shock. This is made possible by the metallic frame and a shock bumper along the sides, as well as a rugged back for tougher protection.
Unfortunately however, there are a few compromises. There are no infinity edges to the phone like the standard S8 on account of the metallic frame and bumper. There's also a somewhat subdued feeling of a full-screen design, which might take away the cosmetic appeal for some users. But then again, the Active lineup isn't made for regular users either.
Like the standard variant, the S8 Active also features Bixby - Samsung's personal assistant. There's a dedicated button on the side to access Bixby and some other Active-only controls, such as quick access to a stopwatch, flashlight, compass and barometer.
As for the specs, the phone carries the same features as its more tame sibling - the standard S8. There's a 5.8" QHD AMOLED display, a 12 MP "Dual Pixel" Camera, Bixby vision, and more.
One of the more alluring aspects of this phone, however, is perhaps the battery. Galaxy Active devices carry larger batteries, and so is the case here as well. Where the standard S8 comes with a 3,000 mAh unit, the S8 Active packs an impressive 4,000 mAh battery for longer-lasting performance.
The Galaxy S8 Active is said to be available on pre-order from tomorrow (i.e. 8th August), and will be available on sale from 11th August. According to Samsung, the AT&T exclusivity is now only for a "limited time", which means that other carriers will be given the opportunity as well, which is a first for the Active lineup. As for pricing, AT&T is offering the phone for $28.34/month over 30 months, which comes to about $850 in total.
