iPhone X vs LG V30: The battle between Apple's best and LG's

13 September 2017 5

Apple's 10th-anniversary special edition iPhone X was made official at an event held hours ago. Falling in line with the speculations and rumors, this new iPhone comes loaded with interesting features with many of them being a first for the whole iPhone series so far. Some of these include a bezel-less display, wireless charging, no home button, and face unlock but as you might have guessed, these features have been available on Android for quite some time now.

While we have already compared the iPhone X with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, we will now have a look at the Apple's latest offering against the LG V30. It is arguably the best Android smartphone yet from LG as it not only offers high-end specs and an amazing display but is also packed with dedicated features to offer premium media consumption experience.

So without any further ado, let's get started.

Build and Design

Both the iPhone X and LG V30 feature metal and glass combination approach for the build and design aspect. It means you will find glass on the front and back while the whole chassis is made up of the metal. This is one of the many tried and tested approaches of the smartphone industry.

On the iPhone X, you will find no bezels on the front except for the top where you usually find a phone's earpiece. This is the first iPhone since the debut of Touch ID to ditch it to make way for a really stunning and amazing design. On the back panel, there is a dual camera setup on the top left corner which is vertically aligned. The rest of the back is pretty clean except for the Apple logo and iPhone branding. It should be noted that this iPhone variant does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack and comes with lightning port instead.

Coming to the LG V30, it also has a bezel-less design on the front panel which looks even better considering that it is taller because of the unusual aspect ratio. On the back, you will find a dual camera setup aligned vertically and a fingerprint scanner just below it. There is also LG and V30 branding but still, the flagship has a clear back panel for the most part.

Both these devices offer dust and water resistance but it should be noted that iPhone X is IP67 certified and the LG V30 is IP68 certified which means the latter can last up to 30 meters depth inside water for a longer period of time. Additionally, the LG V30 is MIL-STD 810G certified which means it can withstand many of the harsh conditions.

The iPhone X offers a 5.8-inch Super Retina HD display with 2436 x 1125 pixels resolution and 458ppi pixel density. It is a bezel-less display with the OLED panel and supports HDR content along with wide color gamut (P3), and 3D Touch functionality. In short, you will have a premium experience while watching anything on it and feel more immersed into the content.

As for the LG V30, you will get 6-inch Quad HD+ (1440 x 2880 pixels) P-OLED display with a pixel density 537ppi. It has an unconventional 18:9 aspect ratio which LG likes to call FullVision display which also happens to be Dolby Vision and HDR10 compliant.

While LG V30 is appearing to be the winner here because of the taller and sharper display with a better display panel, we would like to hold on the judgment until the real-world feedback starts appearing.

The iPhone X boasts Apple's all-new A11 Bionic chipset which also integrated neural engine. It has a 64-bit processor with a total of six cores where two are performance cores and the remaining four are efficiency cores. All six cores of the CPU can also be used together when the situation arises like multitasking between heavy apps and games. The GPU on the phone comprises of three cores and is said to be 30% better than the older version. There are no words on the amount of RAM yet.

With the dedicated neural engine, the new iPhone is able to provide features like Face ID and Animoji. The first feature allows you to unlock your iPhone by just looking at it. It also makes use of functionalities like the front-facing TrueDepth camera and flood illuminator to offer the face unlocking feature. As for AniMoji, these are animated emoji which react the same way as you do while looking at them. These are accessible via iMessage app and can only be shared on the app.

On the other hand, the LG V30 has an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with Adreno 540 GPU and 4GB of RAM. It is the best and most powerful processor from Qualcomm and offers quite a smooth user experience on the LG flagship. Continuing with the hardware aspect, it has a dedicated 32-bit Advanced Hi-Fi Quad DAC for the premium audio experience.

With the iPhone X, you get a 12-megapixel dual camera setup with one wide-angle lens and another telephoto lens. These lenses offer f/1.7 and f/2.4 aperture respectively along with optical image stabilization on both of them. You will get optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom along with Portrait mode and newly introduced Portrait Lighting mode. This new mode allows you to capture Portrait Mode under different studio-like lighting conditions but it is currently available in beta stage. As for recording videos, you can shoot 4K videos at 60fps and 1080p slow motion videos at 240fps.

The LG V30 also comes with dual rear cameras which include a 16-megapixel shooter with f/1.6 aperture and OIS combined with a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens with f/1.9 aperture. While it is currently the only smartphone on the planet to offer f/1.6 aperture, it also has a feature called Point Zoom slider which makes it possible to zoom-in on anything while recording a video. There are also various other camera modes to help you like best shots.

Now coming to the selfie front, the iPhone X comes with a 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera with f/2.2 aperture, auto-stabilization, and Portrait mode support. In comparison, the LG V30 has a 5-megapixel front camera with f/2.2 aperture.

Storage and Battery

The iPhone X will be available only in 64GB and 256GB storage option with no microSD card support on any of the two. On the other hand, the LG V30 has 64GB and 128GB storage options where the latter model is known as the LG V30+ in the market. With LG flagship, you can also use a microSD card for storage expansion and the good thing is that it has a dedicated slot for this purpose.

As for the battery, Apple did not talk about the battery capacity which is something it never does during any iPhone launch. But it is said to last two hours longer than the iPhone 7 on a single charge which is surely an improvement. It also supports fast as well as wireless charging this time around. You can expect up to 50% charge after plugging it in for 30 minutes.

In comparison, the LG V30 has a 3300mAh battery with support for both fast and wireless charging. It comes with Quick Charge 3.0 support which means it can give you 50% battery level within about 30 minutes of charge.

The iPhone X will be running the latest iOS 11 right from the moment of the first reboot. It means you will get access to all iOS 11 features like redesigned Control Center, ability to pay your friends directly from iMessage app via Apple Pay, improvements to Siri, and Air Play 2. Apple has also added support a few gestures on this iPhone model as it does not feature a physical home button. You can now swipe up from bottom anytime you want to go to the home screen and if you want to go to the multitasking window, simply pause your upward swipe in the middle. As for accessing Control Center, you need to swipe down from the top right corner.

Talking about the LG V30, it runs its own LG UX+ based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box which means you will get features like new notification management, split screen mode, quick switching between most recently used two apps, and better battery efficiency. While Google has already released Android 8.0 Oreo, you will have to wait for some time to get an update to the latest version which can take weeks and even months.

Price and Availability

The iPhone X will go on pre-orders starting October 27th and sales will start on November 3rd. It will cost you $999 for the base model but actual pricing may differ depending on whether you plan to get an unlocked version or locked to a particular carrier.

As for the LG V30, it has been made available only a few countries including South Korea. It has been priced at about $850 for the 64GB variant but the exact price will differ from region to region and medium of purchase.

Final Thoughts

Both iPhone X and LG V30 are gorgeous looking smartphones and will definitely make heads turn, no matter where you take them with you. They both are also loaded with a lot of amazing features which means the decision to pick one will mostly be about whether you prefer Android or iOS but in the case of iPhone X, you will have to look at your wallet to see if you can actually afford to get one.

If you can, you can undoubtedly go for it but if you can't or don't want to, you can go for the LG V30 but if you want to stay in the iOS ecosystem or want to join it, you can also consider the iPhone 8. And if you are someone who does not like LG V30, you can have a look at our comparison of the iPhone X with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
