Twitter testing 280 characters limit in some languages with some users

27 September 2017 3

Twitter is one of the most widely used social media platforms out there but there is one issue which has left many users from around the world disappointed. It is the 140 characters limit which leaves users short of expressing themselves completely and they usually have to look for ways to cram everything in that limit. This is the reason Twitter has announced that it is now testing expanding the character limit to 280 to help users avoid such situations in the future.

While Twitter has started to test a new 280 characters limit for tweets, it is doing so only for a few selected languages. This is because as per Twitter data, not every language users are facing the issue of the character limit. It said that users who tweet in languages like Japanese, Korean or Chinese don't encounter the issue but users who tweet in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese face the issue quite often.

Twitter says that most of the tweets in the Japanese language have only 14 characters but in comparison, English language tweets have 34 characters which is more than the double. Additionally, about 9% of English tweets reach the 140 character limit while only 0.4% Japanese tweets reach the mark. This is undoubtedly a huge difference between the character count consumption of users from these two languages.

This is the reason Twitter has decided to expand the character limit to 280 for those languages which are affected by the limitation issue. It means if you are proficient in both English and Japanese languages, you will get the character limit of 280 or 140 depending upon which language you are using for tweeting.

This new character limit is currently under testing with a few selected users. There are no words on its expansion to everyone yet but we will keep you updated on the same.
