The rumor mill has been pointing towards 2019 iPhones featuring a triple rear camera setup for quite some time and now, there is a new Bloomberg report corroborating the same. It suggests that Apple has some big plans regarding camera capabilities for future iPhones. While the 2019 iPhone lineup will more likely be an iterative upgrade, it is the 2020 lineup which is claimed to bring drastic changes in the camera department.
Starting with the 2019 iPhone, Apple is said to release it with triple rear cameras which will basically be an iPhone XS Max successor. The additional sensor on the iPhone will be used for a larger field of view and a wide range of zoom. It can also be used for capturing more pixels and automatically adding missing details from the shots clicked using other sensors. The team is further said to be working on improving the Live Photos functionality. It is currently limited to three seconds but the upcoming iPhones, it will be increased to six seconds.
In other changes for this year's offering, some of the 2019 iPhone versions with USB Type-C ports are reported to be under testing. It means Apple is considering ditching its proprietary Lightning port which it has been using ever since early days. It should be noted that this is only under testing with no surety if Apple will actually bring it in the market.
As for 2020, Apple is working on releasing iPhones with more advanced 3D cameras. These will be laser-powered Time of Flight (ToF) sensors which makes use of the laser to figure out the time taken for the laser to return after reflecting off the object. It will help the iPhone to create a more accurate and better 3D representation of the real world surroundings. This will eventually result in more sophisticated augmented reality (AR) applications. This is not surprising Apple's well-documented interest in the AR space as it is already rumored to be working on its own AR headsets.
The report further claims we might even see 2020 iPad Pros launch with the same 3D cameras. Apple is expected to release a major iPad Pro upgrade in the future but not before spring 2020. This is the reason it is speculated that the upcoming upgrade could be in the form of 3D cameras.
