Apple has released a new game subscription service called Apple Arcade at its first major event of 2019. It is a service aimed at providing quality paid games at a relatively affordable single monthly fee to all the gamers. To make it more lucrative, it will be packed with numerous exclusive titles which will not be available on any other gaming platform.
At the event, Apple said that App Store is currently the biggest gaming platform in the world with a collection of over 300,000 games (free and paid). While free games end up garnering a huge reach, the same is not true for most of the paid games despite offering superior quality, storyline, and characters. It is undoubtedly because of the psychology of paying for each game upfront which is why Apple Arcade has been released.
There are no words on the pricing yet but it should be cheaper to pay once in a month to get access to multiple games instead of paying for each of them individually. As for developers, this should result in a wider reach and a higher number of installs. Apple further said it will also be working with devs and contributing to development costs to help them bring their ideas to reality.
The service will offer over 100 new and exclusive games at the time of launch with new games to be added every month. Some of the major game creators include Annapurna Interactive, Bossa Studios, Cartoon Network, Finji, Giant Squid, Klei Entertainment, Konami, LEGO, Mistwalker Corporation, SEGA, Snowman, and ustwo games.
All of Apple Arcade users will be able to play any of the games on a variety of devices including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. It should be noted that desired games will need to be downloaded on each of the supported devices as it is not a gaming streaming service like Google Stadia. Also, it is neither a new app as it will be available as a new section within the App Store application.
Apple Arcade will become available sometime in fall 2019 with availability in over 150 countries. We should expect more details regarding the service at the same time.
