Apple phasing out older iPhone models to focus on revenue in India

16 July 2019 0

It is a well-known fact that Apple iPhone's sales count in India is nowhere close to the competition. It has even tried to keep selling older models in an attempt to boost numbers but there have not been significant returns. This seems to be the reason Apple is reported to be shifting its strategy from focusing on volume to revenue.

A report from Economic Times cites senior industry executives and mentions that Apple is all set to phase out iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 6s Plus. It will stop providing sellers and retailers with new shipments of these models which means the existing stock will be the only one available for purchase. This holds true for online as well as offline sellers pan India.

The decision will result in the most affordable iPhone model getting expensive by about INR 8,000. It was the iPhone SE that used to be entry-level iPhone with a pricing of about INR 21,000 to INR 22,000 but not anymore. The iPhone 6s will become the new entry-level model with a current selling price about INR 29,500 for the base model. It is also the model which Apple recently started assembling within India and marketing as the "Now Made in India" iPhone.

Additionally, Apple has started assembling iPhone XR and iPhone XS in India and is ready to start selling these units from next month. The locally made units will be sold without any import duties levied on them. This is expected to bring the pricing down and could result in more sales for the company as they will not only get cheaper but are also the latest iPhone models.

It is clear that Apple wants to make the maximum possible profit from the units it manages to sell instead of trying to sell maximum units with less profit. In coming months, we should be hearing if the move brings any success to the company or it will have to come up with another strategy.
