Apple is reportedly planning to bring a new Smart Keyboard with the scissor-switch design for the next-generation iPad or iPad Pro models. The report comes from Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes and it claims that Apple is likely to extend the adoption of glowing scissor-switch keyboards to its new iPad lineup.
The report is presumably referring to an accessory rather than a built-in hardware keyboard.
The term “glowing” here could be a reference made for the backlit Smart Keyboard. The report also claims that this new keyboard could arrive in the second half of 2020. The report from DigiTimes, however, contradicts the report that came earlier from the famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who said the iPad Smart Keyboards coming through 2020-2021 will retain their rubber dome mechanisms.
The scissor-switch mechanism is the same design that Apple switched to recently for its new 16-inch MacBook Pro. Apple had to take this decision as the devices suffered years of issues with sticky or unresponsive keys. This move brings an obvious doubt that Apple could plan to make this mechanism available to other devices in the portfolio.
The report also reiterates that Apple will launch a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with a scissor-switch keyboard and it may get released in the first half of 2020. The prediction goes inline with the prediction made by Kuo last year.
