Apple seeking incentives to manufacture iPads locally in India

19 February 2021 0

Apple has been producing iPhones locally in India for a few years and is now reportedly ready to expand to iPads. The report is coming from Reuters citing industry sources. It is said that the Indian government is working on an incentive scheme to boost the country's computer product exports.

The report mentions that the proposed incentive scheme will have a budget of INR 70 billion i.e. about $964.5 million for a period of five years. It is expected to launch officially by the end of this month and it will offer cashback to manufacturers. This appears to be similar to the scheme government announced for boosting smartphone exports last year. Although, it had a much bigger budget of about $6.7 billion which makes sense considering smartphones are produced in larger quantity.

Apple is said to be interested in becoming a part of the computer export boost scheme but is preferring a better deal. It has expressed desires for a bigger budget than what the government is proposing now. The Cupertino-based tech giant wants it to get increased by at least three times i.e. around INR 200 billion. It is because India does not currently have the supply chain at the scale that it will not be able to meet Apple's demands.

It is hoping to begin iPad production in India before the end of the year. The report does not mention which of three Apple contractors in India would be handling the manufacturing and assembling of iPads. As far as Apple itself is concerned, it is yet to comment anything on the report.
